🌵🌻 This week's favorite highlight!

One of my favorite moments this week was watching a new teacher and an Out Backer discover together how loose parts can be transformed into something new for play. 🤎

This is nature-based education at its finest.

When I see moments like this happening OUT BACK, I know something important is taking place.

✨ The environment feels safe.
✨ The child feels comfortable exploring.
✨ The teacher is supporting and facilitating rather than taking over.
✨ And most importantly… the Out Backer's creativity is leading the way.

A stick doesn't have to be a stick.

A rock doesn't have to be a rock.

A piece of wood, a pinecone, a bucket, or a collection of loose parts can become whatever a child's imagination says it can be. 🌱

That's the WONDER of play.

And when we create an environment where children feel safe enough to imagine, experiment, create, and share their ideas, learning happens naturally.

This is what we mean by learning OUT BACK. 🌵

OUT BACK LEARNING IS OFFERING FALL AFTERNOON SESSIONS! 🍂🌻

🍂🌵 WHY AFTERNOON SESSIONS?

Okay… I think it’s time to give you a little hint about tomorrow’s BIG announcement! 👀

One of the beautiful things about living here in Southeast Arizona is that our seasons give us different opportunities to learn OUT BACK. 🌵

Our summer mornings can be HOT. 🥵

But when fall arrives?

🍂 The temperatures begin to cool.

🌻 The garden changes.

🐛 The children can spend more comfortable time outside.

☀️ And our outdoor learning environment becomes even more enjoyable.

We’ve been listening to what families are looking for, and this fall, we’re making a little change to our Out Back Learning schedule.

And yes… we’re opening up AFTERNOON SESSIONS! 👀

What is nature-based learning in the desert? 🏜️🤷🏿‍♀️

Scooping pea gravel to use in the mud kitchen! 😂🪨

We may not have a traditional forest or cool winter weather, but here in Sierra Vista, we are surrounded by the beauty of the Sonoran and Chihuahuan Desert regions. And guess what we have plenty of? ROCKS! 😂

Pea gravel is one of our main ingredients in the Out Back mud kitchen. 🪨🥣🌿

Nature-based learning doesn't have to look the same everywhere. In our little corner of the desert, it looks like scooping rocks, digging in the dirt, collecting natural materials, creating pretend recipes, experimenting, getting messy, and using what our environment provides.

This is what I love about nature-based learning—it meets children where they are and in the environment they call home. 🌵

Tracing a friend requires trust, fine motor skills, patience, and a whole lot of wait time! 💚

These two Out Backers have been buddies for over six months, so tracing each other was not only a fun activity—it was a wonderful opportunity to build their friendship while practicing important life skills.

Tracing a friend can be a great bonding activity and a way for children to get to know one another. It also creates opportunities to practice patience, sharing, taking turns, and waiting. And let’s be honest…waiting can be challenging when your friend is ready to move on! 😂

What I love about this activity is that it can naturally lead to the other friend wanting a turn to be traced. Now, both children have the opportunity to practice waiting, taking turns, and showing consideration for their friend.

At Out Back Learning, we believe in life skill building through play, and those skills can be child-led or teacher-facilitated. The teacher can model and facilitate the expectations, but then the Out Backer gets the opportunity to practice those skills during play.

Because play is the children’s work. 🌻

Funny story… 🌻

I’ve been trying to grow a mammoth sunflower from seed for over a decade, and this summer, I finally have SUCCESS! 🙌🏾🌻

For years, I was competing with the birds. 😂 They would literally watch me sow the seeds, wait patiently, and then come back later for their little snack. 🐦🌱

But this sunflower has me thinking about Out Back Learning LLC.

There are so many parallels.

Out Back Learning launched in 2019, only to go on hiatus for five years. When it was time to relaunch, I wasn’t simply reopening a program—I was rebuilding the entire thing from scratch. New systems. New routines. New ideas. New partnerships. New seeds being planted with the hope that, one day, there would be a harvest. 🌱

And now…

It’s harvest season. 🌻

But just like this mammoth sunflower, I’m realizing that the harvest isn’t the end of the story. It’s evidence that all those years of planting, waiting, adjusting, protecting, watering, and believing were worth it.

And honestly… we’re only getting started. 🦋🌻

Here’s to planting seeds, protecting the vision, trusting the process, and watching something beautiful grow. 💚

This time last year, Out Back Learning LLC officially relaunched with one big goal: to offer morning preschool sessions on Mondays/Wednesdays and Tuesdays/Thursdays. As we enter our second year of the relaunch (and technically our 8th year in business 🎉), I'm taking a moment to reflect.

Never in my wildest dreams did I think we'd already be adding afternoon sessions. That milestone was part of my five-year plan, yet here we are much sooner than expected. It's a reminder that when you stay committed to your vision, incredible things can happen.

None of this would be possible without the unwavering support of my husband, our amazing Out Back Learning educators, our incredible Out Backer families, and the many community businesses and partners who believe in our mission of connecting children with nature, home, and community. Thank you for trusting us with your children and for helping this dream continue to grow.

A very special shout-out to Nomadics Marketing for creating this incredible video and capturing the heart of Out Back Learning so beautifully.
