We harvested our first batch of carrots this week. Each child got the opportunity to pick a carrot (with help for our littlest one). Growing our own food is such a rewarding experience. They learn and are involved in the whole process from adding compost to the soil and planting seeds, to watering and thinning plants, all the way to harvest, they learn every step of the way.

We’re trying something new in the garden this year. This week we built and installed this trellis to grow our tomatoes on one side and peas on the other. Last year our tomatoes took over so we’re hoping that giving them vertical space will help keep them a bit more contained.

This year we’re growing three varieties of tomatoes, cucumbers, chives, lavender, sage, zucchini, strawberries, white currants, blackberries, sugar snap peas, cauliflower, broccoli, and mini sweet peppers. We have also started a new compost bin this year which will become a fourth raised bed for us to plant in eventually. The kids love turning the compost and looking for worms!

The summer program is open to children ages 2-7.
