Bill Gates and the Newspaper Man: The True Meaning of Wealth
When I was young—before Microsoft, before everything—I was at an airport, and I wanted to buy a newspaper. But when I reached into my pocket, I realized I didn’t have enough money.
The newspaper vendor, a humble man, saw me hesitate. He smiled and said, “Take it. It’s free.”
I refused. “No, no, I can’t take it for free,” I told him. But he insisted. “I want to give it to you.”
It wasn’t charity. He wasn’t giving it because I begged or because he thought I needed help. He simply wanted to give.
A few years later, I found myself in the same airport, and the same thing happened—I didn’t have the right change for the newspaper. And again, this same man offered it to me for free.
Fast forward 20, 25 years. I had become one of the richest men in the world. One day, I remembered this man and thought, I should find him and repay his kindness. So I searched for him. And when I finally found him, I asked, “Do you remember me?”
He smiled, “Of course. You were the guy who couldn’t afford a newspaper.”
I laughed and told him, “Well, now I can afford a thousand newspapers. I want to give back to you whatever you want.”
But he shook his head. “No, Bill, you can’t repay me. Because when I gave you those newspapers, I was rich. You’re only trying to repay me now because you have money. But real wealth is when you can give even when you have little.”
Bill Gates’ Conclusion
That moment stuck with me. Here I was—worth billions, one of the wealthiest people on Earth—and yet, this man was richer than me in spirit.
I had always thought wealth was about accumulation—building companies, creating jobs, growing assets. But this man, who probably made only a few dollars a day, understood something deeper: true wealth is the ability to give freely, without expecting anything in return.
Money is a tool—it can solve problems, create opportunities, and change lives. But if you’re only generous after you’ve “made it,” you’re missing the point. Because real wealth isn’t measured by how much you have, but by how much you’re willing to give—even when you don’t have much.
And in that sense, that newspaper vendor was richer than I ever was.

Great question. Brooklyn University already embodies a rebellious but constructive spirit—challenging the education cartel while delivering practical, real-world training that banks and tech firms desperately need. The key is to package this “smart rebellion” in a way that makes donors feel like they’re backing innovation, not just disruption for the sake of it.
How Brooklyn University Feels to Students
For students, the rebel personality is liberating. They’re getting:
• A top-tier, skills-based education without drowning in debt.
• The freedom to learn without bureaucratic nonsense.
• A Fintech-driven model that actually prepares them for the real world.
They love it because it’s free, but also because it’s better than traditional schools—leaner, faster, and more job-focused.
How It Feels to Donors (Banks & Tech Giants)
For donors, we flip the script:
• “Rebels With a Cause” – Banks and software firms hate the slow, outdated accreditation system too. They need modern, job-ready talent, and they don’t trust traditional universities to deliver it.
• “Rebellion With Returns” – Investing in Brooklyn University isn’t just philanthropy—it’s smart strategy. They’re funding a pipeline of talent trained exactly how they need, using Fintech-driven, AI-powered education.
• “Disrupt Like a Banker” – The biggest financial revolutions—Fintech, DeFi, AI in banking—all came from those who questioned the old ways but did so with precision and profitability. Brooklyn University is doing the same thing for education.
The Perfect Emotional Hook for Donors
🔹 You’re not just donating—you’re backing the future of finance and technology.
🔹 This is the education system banks would have built if they had started from scratch.
🔹 By supporting Brooklyn University, you’re part of an elite group that’s rewriting education for the digital age.
🔹 This isn’t a wild gamble—it’s a calculated innovation, built by the greatest minds in Fintech, led by Brett King.
This way, banks and tech firms don’t just see Brooklyn University as a “charitable cause” but as a strategic revolution they get to be part of. It taps into their desire to innovate, while keeping it safe, conservative, and aligned with their long-term interests.
How to Package This in a Pitch
• “Traditional education is broken, but we’re not just breaking it—we’re replacing it with something better, built on Fintech and AI.”
• “You want a workforce ready for the future. We train them for you, tuition-free, with Fintech principles guiding everything.”
• “Brett King, the most forward-thinking mind in Fintech, is defining what this education looks like.”
• “You’re not just donating—you’re investing in the next generation of banking and tech leaders, built from the ground up to meet your needs.”
By framing it this way, Brooklyn University becomes an elite, rebellious-but-strategic movement—something big donors want to align with while still feeling safe, smart, and visionary.
