Shelter Island School Science Club Shelter Island School Science Club A Student led organization that conducts various environmental monitoring and research projects.

We have been monitoring water quality around Shelter Island since 2009. Recently we added a YSI meter to increase accuracy. All data has been logged in a GIS database, which will be published shortly. We have also been conducting a Dragonfly population study. Population numbers, s*x ratios and genetic variety have been tracked since 2009. In 2012 The Shelter Island Science Club

1. Won an INSYNC

Grant to study the molecular composition of Odonate (dragonfly) Wings at Brookhaven National Laboratory National Synchrotron Light Source. Research is still ongoing.

2. Created a Rain Garden on School grounds to filter rain water runoff from the roof so that less pollution enters the ground water.

3. Participated in “The Clover Project” – a national study of white clover.
