Clear Your Firearm (Safety Check)

1. Point in a safe direction
• Keep the muzzle pointed in a direction where an accidental discharge would cause no injury or damage.
• Keep your finger off the trigger at all times.

2. Engage the safety (if equipped)
• If your firearm has a manual safety, place it on SAFE.

3. Remove the source of ammunition
• Semi-automatic firearm: Remove the magazine first.
• Revolver: Open the cylinder.
• Bolt / lever / pump action: Open the action fully.

Removing ammunition comes before checking the chamber.

4. Open the action
• Lock the slide, bolt, or action open if possible.
• Visually and physically inspect the chamber.
• Check the magazine well (on semi-autos).

5. Verify clear
• Look into the chamber.
• Use a finger to feel the chamber if lighting is poor.
• Confirm there is no ammunition present.

6. Leave the action open
• Keep the firearm open while handing it to someone else or placing it on a bench.
