I hear ā€œI’ll do it laterā€ all the time.

The problem is that later usually isn’t a plan. It just means the student has decided not to deal with it right now.

And for a while, that works.

The paper is due Friday. On Tuesday, putting it off doesn’t really cost them anything. Wednesday might not either.

Then Thursday night comes and now there’s no choice.

This is something I pay a lot of attention to with students.

A lot of them know exactly what they have to do. They can pull up Canvas and show you every assignment. They know the test is next week. They know the paper is due Friday.

Knowing isn’t the issue.

The issue is what happens between knowing something needs to get done and actually deciding when they’re going to do it.

That space gets filled with ā€œlater.ā€

And parents often end up filling it too.

ā€œDid you start the paper?ā€

ā€œWhen are you studying?ā€

ā€œYou said you were going to do that tonight.ā€

Without realizing it, the parent starts making sure decisions get made that the student keeps putting off.

That’s why I’m not particularly impressed when a student can tell me what they need to do.

I want to know what they’ve decided to do about it.

Those are two very different things.

The desire to be chosen can keep you waiting for someone else to see your worth, but choosing yourself gives you your power back. The moment you stop asking for a place in someone else’s life, you begin building a life where you never have to question whether you belong. Your worth becomes clearer when you stop chasing validation and start becoming the person you were always meant to be. šŸ’—

I used to think strength meant surviving every storm. Now I know it means knowing who you are when the storm tries to make you forget. Strength is not always loud, sometimes it is the quiet decision to remain rooted when everything around you is trying to pull you apart. Some roots grow where no one can see them, slowly and silently, but they hold when everything else falls away. I stayed. I grew. I rooted myself deeper. And eventually, I realized the storm had changed me without breaking me. šŸ’

So true!

So true!

A short reply sends some of us straight into decoding mode, rereading it ten times for hidden meaning. But a short text is usually just a short text. We don't have to build a whole story out of one missing word. Like and follow for more.

Self-compassion, Dr. Kristin Neff, and why it is important!

Taking true, honest accountability for our actions and behaviors is so important to healthy relationships.

Taking true, honest accountability for our actions and behaviors is so important to healthy relationships.

Most people think they're apologizing when they're actually defending themselves with softer language.

Explaining your intent to dismiss someone's pain isn't accountability. Saying "I didn't mean it that way so you shouldn't be hurt" centers your comfort over their experience. So does turning yourself into the victim of their feelings, or focusing on proving you're not a bad person instead of actually addressing what happened.

Accountability sounds different. It sounds like "my intent doesn't erase the impact I had on you." It sounds like sitting with the discomfort of having hurt someone without immediately trying to make that feeling go away.

The goal isn't to prove you're good. It's to make things right.

Absolutely!

Positive parenting is linked to higher self-esteem, better emotional regulation, and stronger critical thinking skills in children, compared to authoritarian "because I said so" styles, which can lead to anxiety and suppressed voices [source: APA].
It doesn’t mean they don’t respect us; it means we are teaching them to respect themselves. šŸ’›
