🔍 Rhetorical Analysis Tip: How a sentence is built is part of the argument.
Short sentences hit hard. They land. They stop you.
However, a longer sentence, one that builds and accumulates, adding detail upon detail, can create momentum, complexity, or overwhelm that mirrors exactly what the writer wants the reader to feel.
Syntax is one of the most powerful rhetorical tools a writer has. Most students can spot it. The harder move is explaining what the shift in length or structure is actually doing.
✏️ When you notice a shift in sentence length or structure, ask: what does this rhythm do to the reader?

🔍 Rhetorical Analysis Tip: Two words can mean the same thing and be completely different choices.
"Cheap" and "affordable" are technically synonyms, but one feels like an insult and one feels like a selling point.
That's connotation: the emotional weight a word carries beyond its dictionary definition (denotation).
In rhetorical analysis, word choice is never accidental. When writers call a policy "bold" instead of "reckless," or describe someone as "assertive" instead of "aggressive," they're shaping how you feel before you've finished the sentence.
✏️ Don't just name the word. Name what it does to the reader and how that serves the writer's purpose.

Rhetorical Analysis Tip: Imagery isn't just description.
When a writer paints a vivid picture, they're not decorating. They're doing something deliberate: making the reader feel something before they've had time to think.
That's what you're analyzing. Not what the image looks like, but what it makes the reader experience, how it creates that experience, and why that experience serves the argument.
✏️ In your essay, always connect imagery to effect and purpose. What does it make the reader feel? How does it create that effect? Why does the writer want them to feel that?

⚠️ "I read it. I just can't explain it," is something I hear from students constantly.
There's usually a simple reason: they don't have a framework for moving from reading → thinking → writing.
One of my favorites is SAYS / MEANS / MATTERS:
💬 Says — What does the passage literally say?
🔍 Means — What is the author really communicating?
🤔 Matters — Why does it matter?
It works at every grade level, and once a student has it, the lightbulb turns on.
I build skills like this in one-on-one tutoring. I'm currently accepting new students for reading, writing, and AP Lang prep (exam: May 13th).
