City of Sedona Sustainability Department and Oak Creek Watershed Council collaborate on organizing a field trip to Crescent Moon Ranch for West Sedona School first grade classes on April 23, 2026.
The field trip provided a hands-on learning experience for students to learn about the tiny-but-mighty world of macroinvertebrates in Oak Creek, their important role in the food chain, and why proper stewardship of the creek is important to protecting the delicate ecosystem of the Oak Creek watershed.
With materials and instructions provided by the Oak Creek Watershed Council, both classes took turns collecting, observing, and identifying some of the many macroinvertebrate species that inhabit the creek. In addition to this activity, students also received a lesson on food chains, connecting how the “tiny wildlife” we found in Oak Creek connects to the overall creek's food web."
Thank you City of Sedona and Oak Creek Watershed Council for the amazing learning opportunity afforded to our students!
What do you like about being a West Sedona Wildcat? One of our students shared her thoughts in front of the beautiful mural Trevan Segel and our students are currently creating here on our fantastic campus!
