Let’s get this show on the road!

Our lives are a constant series of choices, exchanges, intersections, and cycles. Each step along the way is part of a dance whose moves demand equilibrium, decisions, and alternatives and it’s up to you to find the unique syncopation within the ‘Rhythms of Your Life’.

Whether you’re conscious of it or not, every day you make choices that affect your future. Even ‘not choosing’ is a choice, and ‘going with the flow’ is fine as long as you’re aware of where that ‘flow’ will take you.

How does one become ‘wise’?

Where does wisdom come from?

It begins, always, with knowledge – a basic acquaintance with facts, truths, and principles from study, observation or investigation. Being knowledgeable doesn’t make you wise, but it forms the foundation upon which wisdom is built.

Wisdom comes with experience, trial and error, evaluation, and lessons learned over time (even from failure!). Wisdom is earned. In order for any of this to happen, you must be open to the lesson, be flexible in your perspective, and be able to impart your experiences to others. The spark of wisdom is often revealed through moments of awe.

Now, let’s step into the astonishing realm of the 4th Rune of the Elder Futhark:

Ansuz – Rune of Divine Messages, Inspiration, and the Breath of Life

Rune Ansuz calls attention to the liminal spaces between inspiration and expression, between concept and creation, between the source and the song.

The word ‘inspiration’ refers to the arousal of the mind to special activity, creativity or emotion. It also means literally the drawing of air into the lungs.

The world has become a maze of hazards that must be navigated wisely.

So, let’s discuss what to do when you face a threat, a rival, or an arrogant jerk.

Of prime importance is the realization that impulsive anger can backfire, leaving you worse off and possibly harming innocent bystanders.

Redirecting your aggressor’s force away from you – their intended target – is a classic martial arts move that maintains the balance of power and leverages your opponent’s momentum against them.

Now it’s time to gain advantage by aligning with the 3rd Rune of the Elder Futhark:

Thurisaz – Rune of Defense, Assertiveness, and Active Boundaries

For the disciplined mind, Thurisaz is a focusing lens – a gateway through which you can view and understand the nature of threats or actions that impact you. With this clarity, you can make precise, thoughtful decisions that neutralize attacks and psychological pressures aimed at you from near and far.

Thurisaz primarily reminds us that we are not powerless.

At the same time this is not an energy to be brandished recklessly or aggressively.

A hedge of thorny roses defends against an intruder by simply standing firm and letting the trespasser’s own movements defeat them. Likewise, if you are in control of your emotions, observing any threats calmly and strategically, you can deflect most abuses before they even start to intrude by projecting a strong presence of confident authority.

Many bullies and trolls are short-sighted. Counteracting thuggish force with intelligent precision requires a cool head and shrewd timing. You needn’t be the biggest, meanest, or most menacing person in the room – just the one with a superior strategy.

To align with the Rune of Defense, Assertiveness, and Active Boundaries, try these high-awareness routines:

• The Thorn Hedge Visualization: To be used when stepping into a high-conflict environment like a difficult meeting, a family gathering or a toxic digital comment section. Close your eyes for a moment and imagine a thick, living hedge of thorny wild roses growing up in a circle around your personal space. You aren’t attacking anyone, just standing your ground. Yet anyone who tries to lunge, manipulate or push past your limits will impale themselves on your boundaries. Without fighting or offending, your calm, rooted presence keeps you dignified and invincible.

• The Anti-Reactivity Drill: When someone throws a provocation, insult, or unfair demand at you, immediately pause for a few seconds without replying. Visualize the Thurisaz Rune as a tactical lens sitting between you and your aggressor. Imagine their words as a heavy object flung toward you. Mentally, step sideways, letting the object’s momentum sail right by into empty space. Then, reply calmly with a precise neutral statement, like ‘That doesn’t work for me’, or ‘We can discuss this later when you’re ready to speak calmly.’ Watch their rage collapse under its own lack of gravitas.

• Surgical Strike Practice: Identify a situation where you’ve been over-explaining yourself to earn someone’s approval or respect. Cut your response down to one sentence. Remove all justifications, apologies, and defensive padding. Deliver it with calm eye contact and no emotional turbulence. Hit the mark cleanly, gracefully, and move on.
