Shepherd the flock of God among you, exercising oversight not under compulsion, but voluntarily, according to the will of God; and not for sordid gain, but with eagerness; nor yet as lording it over those allotted to your charge, but proving to be examples to the flock.

1 Peter 5:2-3

The Apostle Peter is writing these specific words to the elders of various churches across Asia Minor (Modern day Turkey) who are scattered abroad. He wants their hearts to be in the right place as they undertake the gravely serious task of shepherding the flock of God among them. These elders are not to do so “under compulsion” or said another way, because they “have to.”

They are to serve “voluntarily” as God wills. Notice also, they are not to do so for “sordid gain” which could mean anything from leading for the purpose of leeching money from people, to any other ignoble reason (power, control, etc.) In like manner, the elder is called to be eager to fulfill their duty without “lording it over” those who they are called to serve. Those who desire to truly lead, must become servants. Leading for any of these selfish reasons harms those who are meant to be protected, shepherded, and loved.

Now, you may not be the elder of your church, but you’re influencing someone. If you’re a parent, your kids are watching you. If you’re a teacher, your students are listening to your words (even if sometimes it’s hard to tell). We all have an effect on this world. We all leave an impact. The question is not “are you influencing someone” the question is “are you influencing someone, well?” What do they see when they look at you? And if I may press further, what is it you truly want from your position of leadership? Their development? Or their affirmation of your ability? Their success and prosperity? Or what they can “give you”. A moment's reflection on this today may prove profitable.

Father, help me really lead from a place of love today, putting their needs and welfare above my own. In Jesus Name, Amen.
