🎓 Meet Our Second Keynote Speaker — Prof. Dick Smakman 🌍✨

We are delighted to introduce Dick Smakman, University Lecturer at the Centre for Linguistics, whose scholarly work lies at the intersection of sociolinguistics, sociophonetics, language learning, didactics, language ideologies, standardisation, diversity, and globalisation. 📚🔍

His research explores a fascinating question: Why do people make the language choices they make, whether in their first or second language? 🗣️🌐

With academic training in Linguistics and English Language & Literature at universities in the Netherlands and England, and a PhD in Sociolinguistics from Nijmegen University, Prof. Smakman has developed an impressive research profile addressing language variation, identity, standard language, multilingualism, and language use in diverse contexts. 🎓🌍

His influential publications have appeared in leading journals, including the International Journal of the Sociology of Language and Laboratory Phonology, contributing to our understanding of language, society, identity, and linguistic diversity. 📖✨

Meet our Keynote for our upcoming ICAL 2026 Dr. David Block.
He is Honorary Professor of Sociolinguistics in the Department of Humanities at Universitat Pompeu Fabra.

From September 2012 to January 2024, he was an ICREA Research Professor in Sociolinguistics, first in the Department of Letters at the University of Lleida (2012–2019) and subsequently in the Department of Humanities at Universitat Pompeu Fabra (2019–2024).

From 1996 to 2012, he worked at the Institute of Education, University of London (now University College London Institute of Education), where he served as Professor of Languages in Education from 2008 to 2012.

Over the past five decades, he has published books, articles, and book chapters on a wide range of topics, from second-language teaching and learning to his more recent research on multimodal practices and phenomena, including class and inequality, identity, political discourse, social movements, multiculturalism, and bi-/multilingualism. This latter body of research draws extensively on scholarship in political economy, history, sociology, anthropology, and geography.

Importantly, since the beginning of the Great Recession of 2007–2008, he has devoted considerable attention to the critical examination of neoliberalism as the dominant form of global capitalism in the early twenty-first century, as well as to inequality and social class divisions, including class struggle and class warfare, as key collateral effects.

In his most recent work, he has also focused on distinct domains of contemporary society.
