From the Founders and Directors of the New Music Gathering:

Words literally cannot express how grateful we are for the support we have received, especially in this past—and by far most personally challenging—year. We are committed to continuing what began in 2014, and going forward from the original vision in a way that is more focused, more mature, the ever-evolving product of lessons learned and conversations had, of mistakes made and problems sorted.

Our organization has changed, both by design and not, and as we enter our fifth year, we need a moment to assess, to strengthen, and to make the strongest possible case for the music—and the community that makes it—that we love.

This is why our fifth New Music Gathering will not be consecutive.

We will announce, when we are able, our location for 2020, and please know we intend, in the interim, to create a more cohesive, more inclusive, and more powerful conference.

Thank you all for your continued support, and watch this space for updates.

Meet NUMUS Northwest artist Andrew Goldstein, who'll be presenting "Where the Wild Things Are: The New Age of Organizations and Audiences" at noon tomorrow **this Saturday** January 20th.

Is having a quality artistic product enough to sell out the seats in your hall? This workshop explores emerging methods for building an organization, attracting an enthusiastic audience, and elevating engagement in classical & new music in an already over-saturated cultural marketplace. The session is presented by Andrew Goldstein, an international audience strategist at Molina Visuals, contributor to the Huffington Post, and the Executive Director of Seattle’s own Emerald City Music. Goldstein will present real-world examples of innovative audience-building efforts from his work co-founding Emerald City Music, as well as from consulting with arts presenters from New York to Lebanon.

Meet NUMUS Northwest artist Lily Shababi, who'll be giving the presentation "Why Are Women Composers Stuck Talking about Being Women Composers? An Homage to Pauline Oliveros" at 4:00pm this Saturday, January 20th.

How often are women composers found having to explain the messy/historically complicated lack of female composers in western music? Too often. This presentation by third-year Cornish College of the Arts student Lily Shababi will serve as a historical background and fangirl-appreciation moment for Pauline Oliveros, which will segue into beginning a conversation on how to start dismantling the patriarchal perspective in which women are led into music.

Meet NUMUS Northwest artist Chris Sies, who'll perform Spencer Arias' "Other Cities" our Saturday afternoon concert this Jan. 20th at Seattle's Cornish College of the Arts Kerry Hall.

On the work, Arias writes: "People often forget how much where they live affect how they live their lives. This piece is an attempt to explore cities throughout the country. When composing this piece, my intention was that we would be comparing Seattle to other cities, but upon thinking about it, exploring Seattle first before we move to other cities would make the work more effective. The instruments must come from the city it is being performed in. This is paired with field recordings on a 45-minute walk from Capitol Hill through downtown Seattle. Finally, I have asked the performer to go on a 45-minute walk similar to this, and take pictures to act as the backdrop."
