Lakeside Quizbowl

Today Lakeside participated in the regional Knowledge Bowl tournament at Mt. Tahoma High School.

Though Lakeside has historically performed decently at Mt. Tahoma, none of the current club members have ever practiced knowledge bowls questions before. This lack of experience with the format made the tournament an exciting experience.

The team of Austin Wei, Andrew Ma, Carl Schildkraut, Jane Lord-Krause, and Bobby Eleveld placed third in the written test. They would go on to post good scores in all the rounds en route to a 3rd place finish.

With this, they qualify for the state tournament on March 17th where they will defend their state title from the previous year.

Thanks to parents for driving and Mr. Erickson for helping at the tournament. We’ll see you in Arlington, WA for the state finals!

At the Western Washington History Bowl Championships today, Lakeside posted impressive results across the board! The varsity team (Andrew Ma, Austin Wei, Michael O'Toole, and the elusive Matthew Shum who declined to be photographed) went undefeated in the preliminary stage, scoring at least 400 points in every round. They entered the playoffs as the first seed and won the entire tournament without dropping a game or ever finishing below 400 points.

In the individual History Bee, Austin Wei sat out, but Andrew, Matthew, and Michael advanced to the final four where Andrew won the gold medal and Michael won the bronze medal.

Our 9th grader, Vincent Wilson, represented Lakeside in the JV division of the History Bee for his first quizbowl experience ever. He surpassed all expectations and took home the gold medal!

In the written tests, Michael won in the US History Bee and Andrew won in the International Geography Olympiad.

With this amazing performance, Lakeside qualified its varsity history team for nationals, alongside three varsity bee spots, a JV bee spot, and one spot each for USHB and IGO.

Lakeside sent one team to participate in the Collegiate ACF Fall Tournament at the University of Washington as the only high school team in a field of undergraduate and graduate teams.

After an unfortunate round 1 DQ due to miscommunication, Lakeside won all their remaining matches in the preliminary, only dropping one game to Oregon and one to UW B.

The team advanced to the round-robin style final four as the third seed. After losing by a single bonus to Oregon and by a single extra tiebreaker to UW A, they soundly defeated UW B in the rematch to secure third place. UW A ultimately won the tournament over Oregon in a close final round. In individual standings, Austin Wei was the 4th overall scorer of the tournament, boasting an impressive 43.89 points per game.
