Happy Krishna Jayanthi to all who celebrate! Krishna Jayanthi, also called Janmashtami, is a Hindu festival celebrating the birth of Lord Krishna, one of the most beloved and widely revered deities in Hinduism. Krishna is traditionally understood as an incarnation of Vishnu and is celebrated for his wisdom, compassion, playfulness, and devotion to others. The festival has been observed for centuries and is celebrated by Hindus in India and around the world, often in August or September according to the Hindu lunar calendar. This year, it falls on September 4th.

Traditions vary across communities and may include fasting, prayers, devotional singing, storytelling, dancing, decorating homes and temples, and creating small footprints to represent baby Krishna. In some places, celebrations include dramatic reenactments of Krishna’s childhood and festive displays featuring butter, a favorite food associated with him.

Teaching Fellow Spotlight: Erin Frits

Erin Frits (she/her) is joining UCDS as a first-year Teaching Fellow in the 3-4s! She is returning to her hometown of Seattle after spending the last five years in Boston where she attended Northeastern University. After graduating, Erin spent a year as an assistant teacher at a preschool, confirming her interest in education and inspiring her to continue working with young learners. She’s excited to begin this next chapter at UCDS. Outside of school, Erin enjoys collaging and puzzling, tide pooling (especially in the San Juan Islands), golfing, traveling, scuba diving, and spending time with friends and family. Welcome, Erin!

Teaching Fellow Spotlight: Kieran McElvaney

Kieran McElvaney (he/him) is excited to be back for his second year as a Teaching Fellow at UCDS, this time joining the 1-2 team with Mackenzie! After spending last year with our 3rd and 4th graders, Kieran is looking forward to getting to know a new group of students while continuing to grow as an educator. He studied Early Elementary Education at Georgia State University and brings a strong interest in the role social-emotional learning plays in supporting the whole student.

Outside of school, Kieran enjoys hiking, spending time in nature, and quiet time at home with his wife and dog. Lake Chelan is a particularly meaningful place for him, where his grandmother grew up and where he has many family memories. This summer also brought a big milestone: Kieran got married! We’re happy to have him back at UCDS and excited to see what his second year brings. Welcome back, Kieran!

Teaching Fellow Spotlight: Melayna Cabrera

Melayna Cabrera (she/her) is joining the 3-4 team with Andrew as a first-year Teaching Fellow and UCDS Graduate School of Education student. She brings with her a background in museum education, public programming, and classroom support. Originally from South Texas, Melayna earned a degree in Social Science with a certification in Mexican-American/Latine Studies from the University of North Texas before moving to Seattle to pursue a Master’s in Museum Studies at UW. Melayna’s work in education began in high school and has included extended care programs, substitute teaching, museum education, and work as a paraprofessional in a public school. Through museum studies, Melayna became especially interested in informal and exploratory learning and the ways these approaches can empower children. In her free time, she enjoys cooking and learning her old family recipes, as well as exploring farmers markets across the city to find fresh produce for her cooking. Welcome, Melayna!

Teaching Fellow Spotlight: Spencer Green

Spencer Green (she/her) is returning for her second year as a Teaching Fellow, moving from the 1-2s to the Early Elementary team with Patricia. She earned her B.A. in Early Childhood Education from Western Washington University and is continuing her M.Ed. through the UCDS Graduate School of Education. Before joining UCDS, Spencer taught kindergarten and worked with the Nooksack Indian Tribe as a K-5 Youth Academic Intervention Specialist, where she supported students through culturally responsive practices. After spending last year in the 1-2s, Spencer is looking forward to getting to know a new group of students and continuing to grow as an educator. In her free time, she enjoys reading, bouldering, crafting, and traveling with her partner. Born and raised in Ellensburg, Spencer still loves exploring the outdoors and returning to central Washington. Over the summer Spencer visited her partner’s family in Germany and was able to visit five new countries. Welcome back, Spencer!

Teaching Fellow Spotlight: Guthrie Baggett-Strouse

We’re happy to welcome back Guthrie Baggett-Strouse (he/him), a UCDS Class of 2013 alum, for his second year teaching at UCDS! After spending last year as a Resident Teacher in the Early Elementary (EE), Guthrie is stepping into a new role as a Teaching Fellow, working alongside David in the EE. He is also beginning his M.Ed. at the UCDS Graduate School of Education, continuing his own learning while helping create engaging experiences for our EE students. Guthrie holds a degree in Communication Studies from the University of Puget Sound and brings experience in youth coaching, event operations, and community service, including leadership roles at T-Mobile Park and Arena Sports. He is passionate about sports, volunteering, and building inclusive communities, and we’re excited to see him continue to grow as an educator while bringing his energy, teamwork, and UCDS roots back to the EE. Welcome back, Guthrie!

We’re delighted to have Duo Bai (she/her) join the 3-4 team with Maggie as a first-year Teaching Fellow, bringing experience in both elementary education and Mandarin language teaching. Over the past two years, she completed a post-baccalaureate program in Elementary Education at Western Washington University, alongside an internship and teaching Mandarin to students ages 6 to 15. She’s looking forward to getting to know the UCDS community and discovering new aspects of her teaching practice along the way. Outside of school, Duo enjoys reading and hiking. Welcome, Duo!

Teaching Fellow Spotlight: Otis Phillips

Otis Phillips (he/him) is joining the 5th grade team as a Teaching Fellow while pursuing his M.Ed. through the UCDS Graduate School of Education. He holds a B.A.S. in Interdisciplinary Studies with a minor in Environmental Science from Prescott College and brings a background in tutoring and music education. At UCDS, Otis is looking forward to becoming a more well-rounded educator, with a particular interest in social-emotional learning. Music remains a big part of his life, and he spends much of his free time in his home studio writing, recording, and producing his own songs. He also enjoys playing mandolin, running, trading card games, and building LEGO sets. A highlight of his summer was learning to ride a horse, which gave him a new appreciation for the connection, communication, and self-regulation involved in working with animals. Welcome, Otis!

Teaching Fellow Spotlight: Kate Chapman

Kate Chapman (she/her) is joining UCDS as a first-year Teaching Fellow, teaching alongside Sage in the 1-2s. Originally from Golden, Colorado, Kate earned her undergraduate degree in English Literature and Secondary Education from Western Washington University. Over the past year, she has worked as a Pre-K teacher in Bellingham and has experience working with youth in after-school programs. Those experiences with younger children sparked her interest in elementary education and led her to teach and pursue her M.Ed. at UCDS. Outside of school, Kate enjoys reading and writing, playing guitar, and spending time outdoors skiing, waterskiing, hiking, swimming, and running. Although her Colorado roots run deep, she has loved life in the Pacific Northwest and is looking forward to continuing her teaching journey here in Seattle. Welcome, Kate!
