Here is your monthly economic update, courtesy of the AIA/Deltek Architecture Billings Index ยฎ (ABI).

Nationally, architecture firm billings continued to decline in August, and the score for the month was 47.2 (a decline is below 50).

However, the Midwest region reported modest growth, along with firms with a commercial/industrial specialization. More data here: https://www.aia.org/resource-center/abi-august-2026-architecture-firm-billings-continue-decline?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=organic-social

Concrete is the most widely used building material on Earth โ€” and for decades, we've treated it as a static, passive material.

Concrete Consciousness: The Rise of Agentic Architecture flips that idea on its head, using concrete as a lens to explore what happens when materials become active participants in a building's performance โ€” sensing, adapting, and responding over the structure's entire lifespan.

Join Frank Mruk, FAIA, FCSI, FSPS, RIBA + Hessam AzariJafari, PhD for a 3-hour deep dive into material intelligence, AI, digital twins, and regenerative design.

Join us for an immersive pre-conference tour of two remarkable sites in New Hope, PA, where architecture, landscape, and craftsmanship converge: the Raymond Farm Center for Living Arts and Design and the Nakashima Woodworkers campus. ๐Ÿ”— https://youtu.be/cIlIxN6MRzg?si=58gllV2qpvLWIh2s

๐Ÿก Raymond Farm Center โ€” Once the home and summer studio of architects Antonin and Noรฉmi Raymond, this 18th-century Quaker farmhouse was transformed through their signature fusion of modernist and Japanese design. Known as "the New Hope Experiment," the farm was a live/work atelier rooted in close-to-the-earth living, art, and craft.

๐Ÿชต Nakashima Woodworkers โ€” A short distance away, explore the studio and residence George Nakashima designed and built himself, drawing on the same Japanese-modernist design language he learned working alongside the Raymonds. The campus remains a living testament to his legacy of woodworking and organic design.

Together, these sites offer a firsthand look at adaptive reuse, historic preservation, passive design strategies, responsible material selection, and site-responsive planning โ€” lessons architects can carry directly into contemporary practice. ๐ŸŒณ
