LaShonda Blanks knows Schenectady. Having grown up on Hulett Street near Jerry Burrell Park, she said the “village” mentality is still achievable, even in little ways. It’s evident at the Parent Empowerment Center she facilitates at the Schenectady City School District.

“I feel like I know what our community needs and if I’m ever in a place where I can get them what they need, that’s what I’ve done throughout the years,” she said Thursday. “I struggled a lot. I’ve seen family members struggle. And I just wanted to be the person that we all needed.”
