Today is the last day of and the conversation keeps going.
Disability Pride Month changes what you notice, and once you notice, you keep noticing. Who was this dock built for? Where does the accessible route end? How far is that bench from the only parking that works for you?
Access is how people get to do ordinary things. Paddle at sunset. Ride a rail trail on a Thursday afternoon. Sit by the water on a warm day.
An invitation includes the way in. "Come join us" is a start. "Here's exactly how you get here" is the invitation. So, we tell you about parking, the terrain, and the distance before you ever ask.
Welcome is a feeling. Access is a ramp, a bathroom, a boat that fits, and a plan for getting from the car to the shore. It's a phone call about parking. It's equipment that fits the person using it. It's a staff member who asks before assuming.
You got here, and you signed up for the next one before you left.
That's Disability Pride all year long.
Tell us about a place that got it right in the comments! The trail, the dock, the ramp that meant you could just go. We're always taking field notes 🌳.

Welcome to the Summer of Exploration. Some explorers race kayaks. Some pull mugwort. Ours do both. Here is what we have been up to. 👇
Intermediate adaptive kayaking at Belle Isle Marsh brought a real challenge, a lot of giggles, and a whole lot of wildlife!
Our Leaders-In-Training alumni crew spent a day of trail stewardship service at Massachusetts Department of Conservation & Recreation Greenwood Park alongside Mystic River Watershed Assoc. and Friends of the Fells. 🌿
We led an adaptive kayaking program as part of The Great Malden Outdoors Rx at Paddle Boston Blessing of the Bay. This program connects people with disabilities to time outside as part of their health and wellbeing, and a morning on the Mystic River is a good way to spend it!
Open enrollment cycling through our partnership with DCR Universal Access Program on the Nashua River Rail Trail meant practicing communication skills with our tandem partners the whole way down the trail. 🚲
Cambridge Public Schools raced kayaks backwards at Walden Pond in the morning. Our afternoon open enrollment DCR Universal Access Program group paddled the pond, and leaned right into our summer theme.
The Waypoint Wanderers, our young adult hiking group, strolled through Massachusetts Department of Conservation & Recreation Breakheart Reservation together.
Massachusetts Department of Conservation & Recreation Summer Nights at Constitution Beach in East Boston brought families out on the water, enjoying the sunshine. ☀️
Know someone who has been wanting to get back on an adventure? Send this to them!

It’s summertime at Waypoint Adventure and we’ve been everywhere this week☀️
We kicked off our Summer of Exploration at Massachusetts Department of Conservation & Recreation Whitehall State Park with our first open enrollment kayaking program of the season through our partnership with DCR Universal Access Program. Several participants who were new to Waypoint joined us, including a few paddling for the very first time. Scavenger hunt sheets kept everyone observant out on the water 🛶
The Waypoint Wanderers had a lovely stroll in the sunshine along the Bruce Freeman Rail Trail 🛤️
Saturday was a double adventure day! One crew spent the morning on the Charles with six volunteers at our training, songs about negative numbers, moon phase lessons, and a paddle under the Boston University Bridge, one of the only places where you can be in a boat, under a train, under a car, under a bike, and under a plane 🚇
Meanwhile, Waypoint Per Diems Louisa and Kurtis joined The Great Malden Outdoors Disability Pride adaptive birding and disability resources fair along the Northern Strand Community Trail to Rumney Marsh Conservancy. Hosted by the City of Malden Disability Commission and Molina Healthcare, the morning featured an accessible birding tour led by Michael Bryant, and our team provided adaptive equipment and support. So many birds, so many new friends 🐦
At Sunset Lake in Braintree, we wrapped the fourth program in our Leadership for All Abilities series with Friendship Home. This week centered on responsibility. Participants explored what it means to plan ahead, follow through, and ask for help when you need it. Then they split into groups to learn kayaking skills and taught them back to the whole crew. Huge thanks to the five New England Disabled Sports interns from Tufts Occupational Therapy who jumped in with us for the day!
We also celebrated 16 years of Waypoint Adventure with sweet treats from Quebrada Baking Company 🎂
We joined Disabilities Commission to celebrate ADA Day and Disability Pride Month. Our team met so many wonderful people and organizations doing great things across the Boston area. We can’t wait to welcome more folks out on an adventure with us!
