It’s one of our favorite days of the year, ! 🤓🫶🏻 this number (3.1415926…) may be little, but it is fierce!
Pi is a universal constant which plays a key role in geometry, calculus, and physics (which basically makes it unavoidable in our daily lives!) 😅 This ratio is used to calculate and measure most things circular and cyclical.

Recorded estimations of its value have been found in ancient Babylonia, Egypt, China, and India 🧮 However, it wasn’t until 1706 when William Jones adapted the Greek symbol “pi” as the standard symbol for the Greek word “periphery,” meaning “perimeter.”

Today's member spotlight is math education entrepreneur Jacqueline O'Donnell!

Jacqueline is the CEO and Founder of Math Refresh Education Company, which offers tutoring, classroom programming, and content development. With over eight years in education, she is passionate about making STEM more inclusive.

She began her teaching career as a teaching assistant while studying mathematics education, gaining insight into students’ cognitive processes through tutoring. She started her first full-time teaching position in March 2020, just before schools closed due to COVID-19. Adapting to remote and hybrid learning, she observed widening performance gaps despite school-wide efforts. She realized she could create a greater impact working individually with students and transitioned to full-time tutoring in June 2022.

Jacqueline founded Math Refresh in October 2022, quickly expanding to hire a Director of Operations and a team of five tutors, all NYS Certified Teachers. Her company provides high-quality remote tutoring to students across New York.

Dedicated to making math accessible, particularly to girls, she challenges stereotypes by demonstrating how math is used daily. In 2023, she published The Ultimate A-Z Math Scavenger Hunt, a children's STEM activity book encouraging readers to explore math in the world around them. She presented her book and supplemental classroom programming at the 2024 Association of Mathematics Teachers of New York State Annual Conference.

Jacqueline earned a Master of Arts in Teaching Adolescent Mathematics Education from Clarkson University and a Bachelor of Arts in Public Relations and Journalism with a Minor in Business Administration. She holds a New York State Teaching Certification in Mathematics for Grades 5-12.

Outside of work, Jacqueline enjoys life in Glens Falls with her dog, Winston. She loves skiing at Gore Mountain, traveling, boating on Lake George, dining out, baking cookies, and being a Swiftie.

Super Bowl LIX is just around the corner! 🏈 So what? What does football have to do with math? 🤔 A LOT!

A football field is an awesome way to learn about positive and negative integers and the addition and subtraction of them. The field mimics a regular number line, where the 50 yard line is similar to “zero” on the mathematical number line. When a team "gains yardage" or has a "loss of yardage," some quick addition and subtraction calculations are occurring to determine the starting location of the next down. There are also penalties that come into play, and teams can experience a "loss of down," which complicates the math a bit.

So many math calculations are happening during the course of a football game! What other math and sports connections can you think of? Chime in below! 💬

At Math Refresh, we believe that math is all around us, everywhere, all the time. That's what makes it so universal, people are constantly doing math, whether they realize it or not, in their daily lives. Some examples...

⏰ Did your alarm go off and you calculate if you have enough time for one snooze button? Maybe even two…

👀 Did you use a mascara wand this morning? By design, a logarithmic spiral helped with that smooth, even application.

⛔ Did you stop at a four-way intersection? Those streets were most likely perpendicular lines meeting to form right angles.
