A day in the life as a EMT/Paramedic.

This award is a beacon of hope, underscoring the profound impact of my work in igniting transformation and renewal in the lives of others. Witnessing someone's second chance at life is a deeply inspiring experience that fuels my commitment to driving positive change.

YOU are doing CPR wrong!

I rarely ever make videos out of frustration, but when I saw some of the responses in our recent videos saying things like “oh CPR is compression only now,” or “we don’t need to do breaths anymore,” it was honestly infuriating to read. But… it’s not your fault.

In recent years, we’ve seen a slight shift in the way CPR teaching has been presented. And while their teaching isn’t wrong, the way it’s been interpreted definitely has been.

So yes! “hands only” or “compression only” CPR is fantastic when you’re untrained, uncomfortable giving breaths, or when you’re in an area with fast EMS response and you witnessed the cardiac arrest.
The idea is: since you saw the person go down, and EMS will likely arrive before their stored oxygen runs out (about 5–8 minutes), compression-only CPR can keep them alive until paramedics take over.

HOWEVER!!!
This does not mean we “don’t do breaths anymore.”

This is where the confusion is happening. Just because there’s a scenario where compression-only CPR works… does NOT mean we “never give breaths now.”

If we did not witness the arrest, or the 5–8 minutes has passed, we can [reasonably] conclude that the stored oxygen in the bloodstream has been used up.
That means UNLESS we oxygenate them, we’re just pumping deoxygenated blood around…basically doing nothing.

That’s why understanding when to give rescue breaths, how to give them, and the correct compression-to-breath ratio can be the difference between life and death.

I can’t stress enough how powerful it is to get certified. Someone can have a cardiac event in front of you at any moment, and your training will SAVE a life!
