On Patient Appreciation Day, we at the New Mexico Primary Care Association celebrate the patients who help shape the future of care through their voices, experiences, and leadership.

We also honor one of the most unique and impactful aspects of the community health center model: patient-majority governing boards. Health centers are governed by boards made up of at least 51% patients, ensuring that those receiving care have a direct voice in organizational leadership and decision-making.

Thank you to every patient leader, advocate, and board member who helps strengthen the community health center movement.

This week, August 2-8, we join community health centers across the nation in celebrating National Health Center Week, recognizing the critical role health centers play in ensuring access to high-quality, patient-centered care. The 2026 theme, "Building Innovative Care Where It Matters Most," highlights the innovative approaches health centers use to meet patients where they are and improve health outcomes in their communities.

In New Mexico, community health centers serve as trusted partners in advancing health equity, expanding access to care, and addressing the unique needs of rural, frontier, and underserved populations. Their work strengthens communities and improves lives every day.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the health center workforce, boards, patients, community partners, and advocates whose dedication makes this mission possible. Thank you for your commitment to creating healthier communities across New Mexico.

See below for an excellent professional development opportunity that NMPCA will be offering in August and September. We are pleased to have Vanya Garabedian, LCSW, of Intentional Path Counseling facilitating two three-part training series.

These will be Hybrid sessions (in person participation at the NMPCA); in person participation is highly recommended. We will provide light snacks and refreshments.

Participation in all sessions is not required; you may attend one, several, or all six sessions based on your interests and availability. Space is limited per session; make sure you sign up!!

Celebrating a Successful HCCN OSV in Albuquerque!

Over the past two days, the New Mexico Primary Care Association had the privilege of hosting and completing a successful Health Center Controlled Network (HCCN) Operational Site Visit (OSV).

A sincere thank you to our HRSA Project Officer and Senior Public Health Analyst, Lt. Ramotalai Coker, BSN, MPH, and HCCN OSV Consultant, Bob Marsalli, for their time, guidance, and partnership throughout the visit. We hope you enjoyed your time in Albuquerque and experienced the warmth and hospitality that make New Mexico so special.

We are especially grateful to the health center leaders and participants who helped showcase the strength of our network, including Lisa Walraven from De Baca Family Practice Clinic, Molly Farley, from El Pueblo Health Services; Rachel Biggs, Miranda Sedillo, David McGee, and Jessica Ward from Albuquerque Health Care for the Homeless; Ernesto Robles, Bertha Silva, and Karen Dawson from La Clinica de Familia; and Joseph Lopez from Mora Valley Community Health Services, Inc.. Your participation and partnership helped demonstrate the impact of collaborative health information technology initiatives across New Mexico.
