"Lawmakers established the Federal Funding Stabilization Subcommittee last May in response to the loss of funds and threats of cuts from the Trump administration to programs that impact New Mexico at the highest per-capita rates in the U.S., including Medicaid and federal nutrition programs. The state Legislature ultimately approved more than $162 million in spending to replace or augment lost federal benefits."

Our deep gratitude to aides to Reps. Melanie Stansbury and Gabe Vasquez and Sens. Martin Heinrich and Ben Ray Lujan for meeting with Bread for the World members in Albuquerque to listen to our appeal to restore funding for SNAP and WIC and for international nutrition and health programs. We also asked that the legislators support a strong and fair bipartisan Farm Bill.
The churches and school represented at our meetings included All Saints Lutheran Church, Albuquerque Mennonite Church, First Congregational Church, First Presbyterian Church, La Mesa Presbyterian Church, La Mesa Elementary School, St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, St. John XXIII Catholic Community, St. Paul Lutheran Church, Bread Regional organizer Fernie Quiroz joined us for three of the meetings.
The principal and the community school coordinator for La Mesa Elementary School joined us for the Stansbury meeting. The students and faculty at the school contributed some of the 1,100 letters we delivered.
