Womens Folklore Society Monthly meetings are conducted in Spanish. Las Posadas are re-enacted at the Old San Miguel Mission during the Christmas season.
La Sociedad Folklórica is a non-profit organization whose mission is to collect, preserve and pass on the knowledge of the customs and traditions of their Spanish ancestors, (some centuries old), to younger generations and the general public. Like its founder, Cleofas Jaramillo, many of the 45 members can trace their family lineage to the first Europeans of New Mexico – the Spanish colonists of 15
98. In keeping with its mission, the Folklórica invites the public to experience their annual customs and traditions, such as the Baile de Cascarones, which includes the Baile de los Compadres. During the same season, it sponsors the presentation of Los Pastores and hosts a merienda during the annual presentation of Los Tres Reyes Magos. Following the customs of their ancestors, a celebration of mass and a novena prayer is held during the feast day of the organization’s patron saint, Santa Ana. Old hymns are sung and traditional Northern New Mexico foods are prepared and served during the Velorio. A play is written and produced for the installation of new officers, which is presented in Spanish. The theme and play include music, songs, dress, “dichos”, customs and traditions of early New Mexico. During the Santa Fe Fiestas, the Folklorica sponsors its annual ”Exhibicion de Modas y Merienda..” The preview of treasured heirlooms and gowns of yesteryear is usually held at the James Little Theater on the Saturday afternoon of Las Fiestas de Santa Fe. Following the fashion show, a merienda of frothy hot chocolate and biscochitos are served to those in attendance. La Sociedad supports organizations and participates in community and religious events that encourage an appreciation for New Mexico’s rich history and culture. Members have reached out to the schools and community with talks and demonstrations including folk tales, music, dancing, the making of cascarones and the preparation of the old traditional dishes. From time to time, La Folklórica has been called upon by the city and state to help entertain visiting dignitaries from México and Spain.
