I’ve been really nervous about walking any significant distance as I progress my ankle recovery. I finally had a talk with myself that if I didn’t start somewhere it would always feel daunting and I made a promise with myself to start with a walk around the block every day. This morning I walked my dog for the first time since August. This was a huge step in my recovery journey, I walked just under a mile, which I think is the farthest I’ve gone without a break, and handled my dog, which I have been very afraid to do as he can be quite strong. These small steps will lead to big changes, don’t under value the small changes you make for your fitness, they all add up 🏃‍♀️‍➡️

On August 30th I took a fall off my horse which resulted in one of those “freak accidents” in which I broke my talus bone (slide 2). Due to the precarious location of the bone I was told I had to remain absolutely non-weight bearing. After a week my swelling was still too severe to come up with an action plan so I was put on bed rest and sent for an MRI which revealed what I had actually done was far more than just a break. The MRI results prompted an emergency room visit and orthopedic trauma surgery to pin the talus bone, remove a shard of my tibia, and a lot of damaged cartilage. I’m finally in the hard cast portion of recovery which will total 8-10 weeks before I begin the long road of PT to relearn to bear weight and walk on my right foot.
In the limbo weeks before surgery I searched for recovery stories from other athletes and realized how little discourse there really is about recovery and what a toll an injury like this takes on an athlete’s psyche. I know I am not the only one with a story like this and it would be so encouraging to see other’s healing journeys. I thought I would try to share some of my recovery so that maybe someone else could find commiseration and hope during their own recovery. So here is a slideshow of my past month from urgent care ice boot ➡️ split ➡️ air cast ➡️ surgery ➡️ and finally to the hard cast stage I’m in now.
Last week I was cleared to resume upper body exercise so I will share a little of how I’m slowing starting back soon. Here’s to staying strong!
