Twenty-Eight years ago, MEChA de UCSC organized Parent-Student Conference, now know as G.E.N.T.E. (Getting Educated Now to Empower) a one day completely bilingual conference hosted by MEChA de UCSC in collaboration with Engaging Education (http://engagingeducation.org) on Saturday March 8th, 2015! The goal of G.E.N.T.E. is to provide workshops, tours, resources, performances, and discussions which promote parent involvement into their child’s education, and inspire students to see themselves in higher education. Workshops focus on College Life, Admissions, Financial Aid, Community Activism, Platicas, Empowerment and Identity and much more! The conference is meant for students in 7th - 11th grade. The conference will be completely free and includes a tour of the campus, child-care, meals, transportation from the students schools, school supplies, and informative booklets. The conference is for both parents and students but students and their siblings are allowed to attend with a signed consent form. MEChAde UCSC provides mentors, tutoring, social justice tours and continuous workshops to students to build relationships in hope of learning what information will truly benefit the students during the conference.
