A CalArts/MasterPeace Thanksgiving | CalArts 12/27/2014

“We wanted to provide a space for students who might not have the opportunity to be with their families and give them a place where they could celebrate with an alternative family. And art is a great way to make friendships and build peace.”—Sharine Atif, MFA-1 in Film/Video and founder of the CalArts chapter of MasterPeace

A CalArts/MasterPeace Thanksgiving | CalArts Thanksgiving is typically a time to overindulge at the dinner table, but in the CalArts spirit, students who couldn’t travel home this year celebrated Turkey Day not only by enjoying a festive meal, but also by producing art.

Zachary Aronson, 24, is a Los Angeles-based artist focused on pyrography and stone-carving. His work explores relationships between man and nature through the use of natural materials and primal tactics.

Aronson uses torches to effectively draw with fire creating what he refers to as pyrographs. Implementing this drawing technique has brought Aronson in closer contact with his medium, creating a connection between nature and human hand that is impossible to miss. This expands his visual vocabulary by utilizing all of the earthly properties involved; texture and color of wood, fire, and ash.

-

"My current work is comprised of large linear portraits burnt into planks of wood. My art is about identity and the human condition. The larger than life faces are exposed and vulnerable, visceral and raw, created using fire, a traditionally destructive element. I aim to confront viewers with windows into encounters that demand their attention.

I look at my artistic practice as a collaboration with nature, altering the materials I present myself with fire, instilling new purpose and identity by transforming wood to ash in the primal fusion of fire and earth. The varied grains, naturally occurring knots and flaws in each piece of wood offer infinite amounts of creative opportunities. I recognize and celebrate the imperfections in the wood and in the people burnt into the wood.

Ideas surrounding identity and anonymity are very important to me. My work is about humanity and depth of feeling. It's about more than the individual. I want to catch the viewer's eye and draw them in without presenting them with all the information about the faces I depict. I grant my artwork identity by enforcing the anonymity of the individual."

Joshua Rivas is an artist, actor, photographer, poet, writer, filmmaker, activist, and musician. In Joshua’s artwork he incites conversations on topics affecting daily society and aims to bring awareness to parts of the world that are easily ignored. Josh is interested in creating art that talks about the LGBTQIA Community, Feminism, Equal Rights, and Cultural Diversity.

His film "Cricket Stix", which was recently screened at the CalArts Q***r Artists Community Showcase, deals with the issue of identity and the struggle to be your own person while navigating relationships:

“I created this spoken word film to address the complications of growing up in a broken home. This film not only has helped me process and understand where I came from, but also many others have come up to me and told me how impactful my words and images were to them in their own way, which ever way that was.”

MasterPeace ARTIVIST 10/20/2014

Meet Artivist Serina Bernstein, a Los Angeles based filmmaker, collaborator, and movement artist that is interested in cultivating and searching for peace through her work. She previously attended Lewis & Clark College in Portland before transferring to the Film/Video program at CalArts where she resides currently.

Filmmaker's Statement:

"Having good intentions and spreading them creates peace I believe. If I wanted to share a message using my talent I would think about what my specific intentions are, and then go about making my art in a manner that is aligned with that and communicates the message that I want to communicate. Sometimes an artist statement is necessary. As an artist, I am currently focused on video work. My most recent video aims to find peace within relationship and it is titled Balance. "
