ADD Study Skills & Solutions
1. Have a planner. It doesn’t matter whether you use a paper planner, your cell phone or a calendar on your computer, every student needs to have a means to organize and plan work.
2. Schedule everything in. Put everything in your planner, including your classes, library and study sessions and even breaks like exercise, relaxation and time with friends. This helps to avoid interruptions.
3. Study in increments. Cramming the night before a test isn’t just stressful; it’s ineffective. Last minute stress can lead to more anxiety and blocks our ability to access and recall information. Repetition helps in learning new tools, and concepts.
4. Use a variety of study tools, such as using flash cards, copying notes or talking with others about the material. Or maybe walking helps you retain facts. Some students need to use a variety of techniques. They learn best with a multi-sensory approach, using more than one sense such at touch, smell, visual and auditory.
5. Create a contingency reinforcement plan. Setting up a system where you earn rewards for completing tasks may motivate some students, as well as adults. Delay that gratification until you have achieved a particularly difficult goal, task or study session.
6. Have realistic expectations. If you know a subject or task is challenging, don't set yourself up for failure, realize you are making small improvements each time you study, and work on a project. Know staying focused is an achievement and can be a learned behavior and new habit for longer periods of time.
