Take Action Alert -Send Governor a Message by June 15
California voters wrote Proposition 98 into our state Constitution in 1988 to do one thing: guarantee that public school funding could never be traded away during a tough budget year. This year, that guarantee is being treated as optional — again.
Here’s where things stand: The Governor’s January budget proposed withholding $5.6 billion in constitutionally guaranteed Prop 98 funds. California State PTA and the statewide education coalition pushed back hard. The May Revised budget reduced that number — but did not restore it. The May Revise still proposes withholding $3.9 billion from California’s public schools. That’s $643 stripped from every one of California’s 5.7 million students in the budget year that begins just 10 weeks from now.
This is the third consecutive year the administration has proposed manipulating the Prop 98 guarantee. A dollar delayed is a dollar denied — and our kids are already feeling it.

In the May Revise, California’s Governor has proposed withholding $3.9 billion in Proposition 98 funds from public schools — money that is constitutionally guaranteed and already belongs to our students.
This is not a “budget maneuver.” For California’s families, it is a broken promise. That $643 per student is a school counselor our kids won’t see. It’s a special education service delayed. It’s one teacher doing the work of two in an overcrowded classroom.
Proposition 98 was passed by California voters in 1988 and written into our state Constitution because voters understood that stable, predictable public school funding is worth protecting. It is not optional. It is the law.
The June 15 budget deadline is approaching. Contact your state legislators and Governor Newsom now — urge them to reject this withholding and fully fund California’s public schools.

Today your Fourth District PTA Advovacy team had a great event at Orange County Registrar of Voters where we learned about how to run a voter registration drive at your high school with support from TheCivicCenter.org. Then we toured the ballot counting center of Orange County. It was fascinating and informative to see how our ballots are processed and counted so securely and efficiently!
