How to practice when you don’t have your uke

One of my students recently lost his ukulele 😭This gave me the idea to create a list of exercises for him to do until he’s able to replace it.

1. Finger Tapping: Tap your fingers on a table or any flat surface, focusing on maintaining a steady rhythm.

2. Air Strumming: Mimic strumming patterns in the air to keep your strumming hand engaged.

3. Fretting Exercises: Practice forming chord shapes in the air or on a tabletop to reinforce muscle memory.

4. Visualization: Close your eyes and visualize playing your favorite songs on the ukulele, paying attention to finger placement and strumming patterns.

5. Listening Sessions: Immerse yourself in ukulele music to stay connected to the instrument's sound and style.

6. Hand Stretches: Perform hand and finger stretches to keep your muscles flexible and prevent stiffness.

7. Chord Chart Review: Go through chord charts mentally, visualizing finger placements for various chords.

8. Rhythm Clapping: Clap along to songs with a focus on rhythm to maintain a sense of timing.

9 . Humming and Singing: Practice singing along with ukulele tunes, reinforcing your connection between vocal and instrumental elements.

10. Imaginary Chord Changes: Mimic the motion of changing chords in the air, focusing on smooth transitions and maintaining proper finger positioning.

🎵🌟 Learning Ukulele Chords 🌟🎵

These are some of the first few chords I teach new ukulele students.

If you’re just getting started, work on mastering C and F chords. Once you feel comfortable changing between C and F, add G into the mix. As you progress, incorporate G7 once you’re comfortable with that.
