The PSAT is a standardized test administered by the College Board that serves as a practice version of the SAT. It is designed for high school students and is typically taken in the 10th or 11th grade. There are a few key purposes for the PSAT:

Practice for the SAT: It helps students familiarize themselves with the format and types of questions they will encounter on the SAT.
Assessment of Skills: The test assesses students’ skills in reading, writing, and math, providing feedback on areas where they might need improvement.
National Merit Scholarship Program: For 11th graders, the PSAT/NMSQT (National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) can be a qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship Program, which awards scholarships based on performance.
Many colleges are now considered “test optional,” which means that colleges and universities do not require standardized test scores, like the SAT or ACT, as part of the admissions process. Please visit https://fairtest.org/test-optional-list/ or a college/university website to find out if SATs are required as part of the admissions process.

Please reach out to your school counselor if you have questions.
