Our classrooms on Day 2 of Natural Sciences of Hawaii trip. We studied all things water - the water ecosystem and creatures that live in water, the hydrologic cycle that delivers water, oxygen and other chemicals (some good and some bad) that dissolve in water. We were at Akaka Falls State Park and Richardson's Beach Park.

Did you know that a research student stipend is $3000 a summer. Can you help us support two students this summer with a small donation to one Westminster day? We hope to reach 150 donors for our 150th year and we have 90. We just need 60 more donors for an extra $1875 for our 1875 founders day. Any donation, large or small, helps us meet our goal. Link here for https://giving.westminsteru.edu/campaigns/great-salt-lake-institute-2. You can choose to join team fly or team shirmp!!!

For the end of the year, the chemistry club put together science activity kits for the 5th graders at Calvin Elementary. The "slime kit" shared between two students had all of the safety equipment, chemicals, graduated cylinders and an activity guide (written by Professor Robyn Hyde and Chemistry student Luke Miller) to make 2-4 batches of slime. Completing this activity, the 5th graders learned all about the chemistry of slime.
The club also put together Glo Germ hand washing kits. First you cover your hands with a lotion, wash your hands and then see how much fluorescent dye remains. This was a perfect activity to learn good about germs, how easily germs transfer and about proper hand washing. Funding for all of the kits was provided by Edwards Lifesciences.
Many thanks to the Edwards Lifesciences Foundation for the funding to create these kits, that now can be used year after year, and many thanks to other volunteers for helping us put together these kits.

CORRECTION: β-Damascone is not a phenylpropanoid; it's a degradation product of a carotenoid. We replaced it with 2-phenylethanol in a new graphic shared in the comments.

Westminster's Environmental Center is hosting an Earth Day celebration on April 22 from 3-5 PM in Richer Commons. Organizations involved in the school and local community will be staffing tables, so this is a wonderful opportunity to learn about these various organizations and the internships/jobs/volunteering opportunities/etc. that they have to offer while celebrating Earth Day. ACS will also be tabling at the event. We hope to see everyone there! (In the event of bad weather, the event will take place in Bassis.)

The Westminster College chemistry club had an electric time with the Churchill Junior High MESA club. We experimented with metals and electricity. The Van de Graff generator, plasma globe and electricity sticks used in the experiments were provided by the Edwards Lifesciences foundation. Thanks !
