Maybe it was meant to be funny, but the joke was really at the expense of someone’s age.

Have you ever left a doctor’s appointment feeling like your symptoms were written off simply because of your age?

Too often, older adults experience this exact moment. Raising awareness about ageism in healthcare starts with recognizing these patterns and empowering yourself as a patient or care provider to advocate for proper care.

When symptoms arise, push for answers, ask for comprehensive evaluations, and ensure your care team sees the whole person, not just a date of birth.

This Friday, October 9th is Ageism Awareness Day!

When companies pass over older adults based on ageist assumptions, the impact doesn't stop at employment. Age discrimination in hiring triggers a severe domino effect, leading to financial strain, housing insecurity, poor nutrition, and stress-related health issues.

The reality? Older adults are reliable, hard-working, responsible, and experienced contributors to our workforce. Passing them over hurts not just individuals, but our entire community.

At the Marin AgeWell Collaborative, we believe awareness is where change begins. We need local companies and organizations to step up, eliminate ageist hiring practices, and hire older adults. Let’s change the narrative on older workers and build an inclusive community where experience is valued.

What are older adults in Marin telling us? 💬

Community members at the Marin Senior Fair helped us hear directly about the issues that matter most to them, from housing and healthcare to transportation, affordability, and more.

Here’s what 55 Marin older adults shared with us. Their ideas and experiences help us better understand the needs and priorities of older adults across Marin.

We spent the day listening, connecting, and learning from older adults across Marin.

So many older adults stopped by the Marin AgeWell Collaborative table to share their experiences, concerns and ideas about what it means to grow older in Marin County.

Several themes came up repeatedly: the high cost of living, the lack of affordable housing, Social Security not keeping pace with expenses, and limited employment opportunities for older adults, including concerns about ageism in the search for employment.

But we also heard something equally important: a desire for connection, belonging, purpose and opportunities to contribute.

We were grateful to connect with so many community members, as well as Donna Isralsky and Luke Barnesmoore of Marin Senior Life Foundation, Mario Ernesto Lopez of Marin Community Foundation, and Caroline Joachim, Vice Mayor of Mill Valley. Also pictured: Rachel Kertz and Maria Rodriguez of Marin AgeWell Collaborative.

These conversations remind us why Marin AgeWell Collaborative is here to unite efforts, information and voices and create greater connection for older adults and those serving them throughout Marin.
