The ILWU/PMA Annual Luncheon is almost here, and we want to introduce to you this years keynote speaker!

Meet our keynote speaker: Gary Herrera, Former President of ILWU Local 13.

For 21 years, the ILWU/PMA Luncheon has brought the Harbor's port community together around one shared commitment: working together to serve the children of our communities.

This year, Gary Herrera carries that message forward as our keynote speaker. His leadership in our community reflects what this event is about, a port that takes care of its own.

When the maritime community gathers on June 26, it's investing directly in the next generation across San Pedro, Wilmington, Harbor City, Harbor Gateway, and Lomita.

🚛 Idling engines, heavy truck traffic, and poor air quality are everyday realities for the communities we serve in the LA Harbor.

For the kids and families in the Harbor area, these issues are not just policy debates. They shape what those we serve come in contact with on their way home or to the clubhouse. 🏡

At BGCLAH and Toberman Neighborhood Center, we have always supported Harbor families. We focus on what young people need to grow up healthy, which includes clean air and safe streets.

A new staging and logistics site has been proposed in the Harbor area and is now open for public review. The goal is to move truck activity into industrial zones instead of neighborhood streets.

We do not endorse specific projects, but we always pay attention to anything that affects the conditions our kids live in. ♥️

🎉 Senior Social 2026 was exactly what it was supposed to be; over a 100 Club were members packed into the Port of LA Boys & Girls Club for a lively celebration filled with photoshoots, food, games, and time with the people they've grown up alongside. 🙌

It was a chance for them to celebrate before everything changes. ♥️

These seniors are heading to college, to careers, to new cities and starting new chapters in their lives. A lot of them have been coming through our doors since they were kids. Watching them walk into what's next is the whole point of what we do.

Graduation is coming. And we'll see you there!

🎶 Here’s what happened in our music program this past April. 🎶

Our music program closed out the month with two marquee moments.

🎤 Bread, Butter & Ballads at our San Pedro site turned modern radio hits into stripped-down ballads, with student vocalists backed by piano and guitar. A cozy café-style night for friends, family, and community. Thank you, Mr. Oscar, for putting it together!

A week later, the Oscars brought our music program together for a night of awards and live performances! Members across rock bands, drumline, and vocals took the stage and the statuettes. 🤘

And the next stretch is the busiest one of the year. Recital season is here! Come hear what these kids have been building.

📍 Visit bgclaharbor.org to see upcoming recitals, enroll, or support us with a donation! Experience the music 🎵 reach out to your local site to learn how you can get involved!

🎯 Permits earned, internships placed, and resumes refined. That was April for Career Bound! 😎

Our teens really put their hard work into action this month! We’re excited to share that seven members have joined the Kaiser Permanente Summer Internship Program! 🏥

🚗 This school year, more than 160 members took part in Driver’s Ed. Most have finished their coursework and are making great progress, with an impressive completion rate of over 82%!

In Skilled Trades, our members represented BGCLAH at the CIEF Design Build Competition at Golden West College, joining 30 other schools from across California.

We’d also like to highlight two Workforce Center interns this month:

⭐ Dylan is becoming a leader at one of our sites, mentoring younger members and considering a future as a Youth Development Professional with the Club.

⭐ Dayana is an aspiring baker who brings professionalism and curiosity to the kitchen. She is now exploring Culinary Arts courses at L.A. Harbor College.👩‍🍳

Thank you to our school partners, donors, industry collaborators, and staff for supporting our members. We couldn’t do this without you!

In April, our Visual Arts members all around the Harbor spent the month discovering what it means to create!

For Earth Day, teens at our San Pedro site took part in the Sustainable Swap Meet. They put together new outfits from donated clothes and made unique pins using recycled bottle caps, making one-of-a-kind pieces of art!

During Critique Week, our Arts Academy members took a break from painting. Artists and instructors came together to discuss what works in each piece and what each artwork is truly about.

Here are a few of our artists we want you to meet!

🌸 Angely, 2nd grade, whose focus and willingness to help her classmates shape the Fine Arts classroom around her!

🌸 Holanda, a 5th grader at Harbor Gateway, creates entire worlds for her original characters, giving each one its own backstory!

🌸Finally, Citlaly, an 8th grader at our Port site, isn’t even in high school yet, but she’s already running her own photography business! 💪📸 She books events, headshots, and fundraisers, all while learning to master strobe lights in class.

Whether you join us at a showcase, sign up for our arts academy, or support us with a donation, thank you for helping our LA Harbor artists grow!

Three trophies, three arenas, all from one school in one month! VHTP definitely had itself quite an April!

🏫 At Vladovic Harbor Teacher Prep, Samuel M. and Guadalupe G. were crowned 2026 Los Angeles Metropolitan Debate League Champions, with Eduardo V. and Tyler R. taking the JV Division on the same circuit. And Theater wrapped Disney's The Little Mermaid with a banquet honoring more than forty members who pulled the production together! 🧜‍♀️

The rest of our roster doesn’t quite either! Our Harbor City girls Mamba League went undefeated all season and brought home back-to-back championships! They’re creating a dynasty, and all eyes are on them. 👀 🏀

Our Harbor Gateway Club sent member Emily to Sacramento for CA Days of Advocacy, where she spent the day talking program funding directly with legislators. And at ECMS, the art program is gearing up for the May art show and the San Pedro Art Contest! 🎨

🤖 👩‍🚀 Robots and astronauts? Basketball and marshmallow towers? What do all these have in common? This April, our Wilmington locations brought energy, creativity, and teamwork to every event. 😎

First, at our Wilmington clubhouse, Raytheon led a hands-on STEM session where members built robots that draw with markers and engineered a bouquet of flowers. Shortly after, members gathered in Regional Director Sonia's office to watch the Artemis II crew splash down live, following their ten-day trip around the moon. 🌕

👷 Next, at Harry Bridges Span School, our 6th graders out-engineered every other grade in the marshmallow tower challenge and took 1st! Wilmington Park's boys Mamba League 🏀 closed the season in 2nd, and the Marching Jaguars showed up loud for College Signing Day. And that’s not even all that happened at our sites this month!

Can you believe it’s been 40 years since the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Los Angeles Harbor Golf Classic started? We can’t either, so here’s a short recap so you can see it to believe it! ⛳️🏌️‍♂️

This past Monday, our donors, sponsors, and supporters were on the course golfing for the very reason we've been doing this for 4 decades: for the youth in our Clubs.

To the volunteers and staff who built the day, and our Youth of the Year, thank you for being present and for reminding us why we keep doing this!

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for making the 40th Annual BGCLAH Golf Classic such a success for our youth! Your support ensures programs and opportunities for the young people in our Clubs. See you on the course next year! 😉
