Switching majors is one of the most common changes a college student makes. A student starts sure about one path, takes a few classes, and realizes another fits better. That's growth, not a setback.

Where it gets expensive is when the switch happens without a look at the big picture. A change in sophomore or junior year can add a term, or a whole year, if the requirements reset and coursework doesn't carry over. The change itself is fine. The unexamined change is what costs time and tuition.

The fix: before a student commits to a new direction, map it out. Which credits carry over, which requirements reset, and whether a related major, minor, or experience reaches the same goal more efficiently. Done that way, a thoughtful pivot stays a pivot, not an accidental fifth year.
