What is Maculelê?
Maculelê is a traditional folk dance from Bahia, Brazil, with roots in Afro-Indigenous-Brazilian culture. It simulates a tribal fight using sticks and is considered to have originated on sugarcane plantations during the colonial era. Over time, Maculelê blended with other Brazilian cultural expressions like capoeira and frevo. Popó do Maculelê helped popularize it, forming a group in Santo Amaro.
