Do you know why so many watercolor paintings look flat?
It’s usually a Value problem, not a color problem. 🍐
In this reel, I’m showing you my favorite secret weapon: The Value Study. (Look at the B&W sketch in the corner! 👀)
Instead of guessing, I simply translate those greys into colors.
👇 Here is the Layering Formula used in the video:
1️⃣ The Highlight (Lightest Value):
Start with watery Yellow. This acts as the “white” of the paper but gives it a warm glow.
2️⃣ The Form (Mid-Tone Value):
While the yellow is still wet (crucial step!), drop in Warm Red and Ochre. Let them bleed naturally to create that roundness without hard lines. 🖌️
3️⃣ The Anchor (Darkest Value):
Use deep Brown for the cast shadow and stem. This provides the contrast needed to make the fruit “sit” on the paper.
4️⃣ The Texture:
Finish with speckles. This hides imperfections and adds realism!
✨ Result: A pear that looks juicy and 3D, not a flat sticker.
