Christmas 2010, my friend and fellow teacher Leila Manning gave birth to twin boys - a joyful moment tempered by their premature arrival at only 24 weeks.

Ewan, however, struggled with a series of infections, surgeries and blood transfusions. He slipped away, after living a very short life of only 75 days. MARCH FOR BABIES: A MOTHER OF A MOVEMENT My twin sons, Liam and Ewan, were born at 24 weeks on Christmas Day, 2010. They were 16 weeks premature. They faced many challenges due to their prematurity. They battled each day for their lives - through infections, transfusions, and surgeries. Their days in the NICU were the scariest of my life.....

The Pirate crafted Christmas Bibs, and Diaper Babies, and then filled wee stockings for the wee babies in “his” NICU. NICU Life is hard, and during the holidays its even harder. We hope the stockings brighten the holiday for the babies and their families!

Without March of Dimes research and support, our former 24 week, micro-preemie, surviving twin would not have survived his birth and 109 day NICU stay. He would not be a healthy, happy 9 year old Pirate today. So, carry on, March Of Dimes, we fully support your advocacy for black mothers and their babies!
