With all due respect to the others, the official title of "Presidents Day" is Washington's Birthday. No need to get Madison. It's Truman. We Grant that it's a little confusing, but you Arthur know. You can try to Lincoln them all to the theme, but the federal holiday only recognizes Washington, by George.
Washington’s Birthday was the first Federal holiday to honor an individual's birth date. In 1885, Congress designated February 22 as a holiday for all Federal workers. Nearly a century later, in 1971, the Uniform Monday Holiday Law changed the date to the third Monday in February. (5 U.S.C. 6103)
We're proud of our part in sharing the legacy of George Washington. The commander of the Continental Army, first President of the United States of America, and Father of his Country towers in our history as tall as the Washington Monument in the city that bears his name.

This February we’re celebrating our love for libraries — and especially the DAR Library, a truly one-of-a-kind treasure for history and genealogy lovers! Founded in 1896, the DAR Library has grown into one of the nation’s premier genealogical research centers, with an incredible collection of over 200,000 books, 10,000 research files, and thousands of manuscript items covering American history and family heritage. Many of the nearly 40,000 family histories in the collection are unique or rare and found in very few libraries nationwide.
Whether you’re tracing your roots, studying Revolutionary War era records, or exploring special collections on African American, Native American, and women’s history, the DAR Library’s rich resources are free and open to the public. Visit www.dar.org/library to discover more and plan your visit!
The 2026 DAR Library Restoration Project is beginning in July 2026. We are excited to restore this historic space and to complete the important preservation work to better serve Library visitors for many years to come in the future! For updates, please follow the DAR Library on Facebook where we will be posting reminders, helpful tips, and progress reports on the project. George Washington became America's 1st President
George Washington was unanimously elected as the first President of the United States on February 4, 1789, when the Electoral College convened to cast their votes. While electors were chosen between December 1788 and January 1789, the official vote took place on February 4, 1789. He was later inaugurated on April 30, 1789.
With 69 electoral votes, Washington won the support from each participating state. Ten states cast electoral votes. New York, however, failed to field a slate of electors. North Carolina and Rhode Island were unable to participate because they had not yet ratified the Constitution. After a quorum was finally established, the Congress counted and certified the electoral vote count on April 6.

Ella Jane Fitzgerald was the first woman to win multiple GRAMMY awards, and the first African American woman to win a GRAMMY. Her singing debut happened in 1934, at the Amateur Night at the Apollo Theater, as a seventeen year old who planned to do a dance routine! When she realized she would be on stage after a local dance group, she made a quick decision to sing Hoagy Carmichael's song 'Judy.' The crowd loved it! She took home first prize that night. In 1938, her jazzy rendition of 'A-Tisket, A-Tasket' sold over one million copies. This version was her first recording to be inducted into the GRAMMY Hall of Fame. During her career, Ella Fitzgerald recorded more than 200 albums. At the first GRAMMY Awards, in 1958, two of her albums were nominated and she won for both! She was awarded Best Jazz Performance, Individual, and Best Vocal Performance, Female. She was the first woman to receive the Recording Academy Lifetime Achievement Award, and the first person to win the Society of Singers Award (creased by Ginny Mancini, Henry Mancini's widow), in honor of her musical achievements and charitable support. The award was renamed the Ella Award.
She received the U.S. National Medal of Arts, the French Commander of Arts and Letters Award, and a number of honorary doctorates.
She also won 13 GRAMMY Awards, and had 8 recordings inducted into the GRAMMY Hall Of Fame.
Ella Fitzgerald's motto was, 'Just don't give up doing what you love to do.'
