In an increasingly digital world, there’s a growing recognition that not all learning should happen on a screen.
Hands-on learning introduces something different:
• Productive struggle
• Trial and error
• Physical problem-solving
These are not inefficiencies - they are the learning.
When students build and troubleshoot real systems, they develop a deeper understanding of how technology actually works.
And more importantly, they build the confidence to engage with it.
That's the power of doing! 💪🚀

For years, equity in education has focused on access to devices.
But access alone doesn’t guarantee meaningful participation.
The next phase of equity in STEM is about how students engage:
• Can they explore without language barriers?
• Can they demonstrate understanding beyond text?
• Can they see themselves as capable of building technology?
Hands-on, collaborative models create new entry points, especially for multilingual learners and students historically underrepresented in STEM.
Equity isn’t just about access. It’s about agency.
That’s why at Piper, we believe students shouldn’t just consume technology, they should create with it.
When learners build, problem-solve, and collaborate through hands-on STEM experiences, they gain more than technical skills. They gain confidence, voice, and a sense of belonging in the future they’re helping shape.

As edtech expands, so does the conversation around student data.
District leaders are asking important questions about what’s collected, how it’s used, and what’s truly necessary.
At the same time, it’s worth considering:
What learning experiences don’t rely on extensive data collection at all?
Experiential, hands-on learning environments shift the focus back to:
• Observation over tracking
• Creation over consumption
• Demonstration over data points
In many cases, the most meaningful learning is visible, not stored.

There’s a growing concern in education:
Are we putting too much technology in front of students?
It’s a fair question, but perhaps the better one is:
What kind of technology experiences are we creating?
Passive consumption and active creation are not the same.
When students build, wire, and program systems themselves, technology shifts from something they use to something they understand.
The future of edtech is not more screen time, but more intentional, hands-on interaction with the systems behind it.
