BAAITS In many of our cultures, some individuals possessed and manifested a balance of both feminine and masculine energies, making them inherently sacred people.

Bay Area American Indians Two-Spirits (BAAITS) exists to restore and recover the role of Two-Spirit people within the American Indian/First Nations community by creating a forum for the spiritual, cultural and artistic expression of Two-Spirit people. We are the Bay Area American Indian Two Spirits, a community-based volunteer organization offering culturally relevant activities to LGBTIQ Native Americans, their families and friends. Some of our programs include:
Community Gatherings
Drag Performances
Traditional Arts
Drumming
Educational Events
Pride Contingents

What does the term Two Spirits mean? These sacred people were given many names and specific traditions within tribal practices. To honor the connection to specific Native traditions and build an inclusive collective identity the term “Two Spirit” was adopted.

Today is Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

Two-Spirit people were here long before there was a San Francisco, a California, or an acronym. Colonization tried to erase that. Two-Spirit people have been reclaiming it ever since, on their own terms.

San Francisco Pride happens on unceded Ramaytush Ohlone land. Our community partner, Bay Area American Indian Two-Spirits (BAAITS), has been organizing here for decades, creating a forum for advocacy, wellness, and the spiritual, cultural, and artistic expression of Two-Spirits and Indigeq***rs.

Follow our friends at BAAITS and support their important work.

On this Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we lift our eagle fans to the Two-Spirit, Indigiq***r, and LGBTQPAI+ Indigenous elders, leaders, mentors, and knowledge keepers who stomped the grass before us. 🌿🪶🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈

Long before there was a path, you made one. Through your courage, teachings, laughter, resistance, and love, you cleared the way for our youth to dream bigger, stand taller, and know they belong. We honor those who carry ancestral knowledge, protect community, and remind us who we are and where we come from.

May we continue walking the trails you've lovingly opened and leave them even wider for those yet to come. 🌱✨

Long before terms like ‘LGBTQ+,’ ‘q***r,’ ‘trans,’ ‘non-binary,’ and even ‘two-spirit’ existed, Indigenous Peoples had their own understanding of what we would come to describe as gender and sexuality. While not all cultures had words or practices to recognize these ways of being, some Tribes held these individuals as sacred within their roles and communities.

Despite attempts to erase these traditions through colonization, Indigenous understandings of gender and sexuality continue today and remain a vital part of our communities.

This , we celebrate our q***r, trans, non-binary, and two-spirit relatives and honor their long cultural and historical legacy.
