Kâtabim/Apo Xeno Topo • the song that started it all. I first thought this was a Greek folk song about a mysterious girl from a foreign land. It's actually a universal melody sung in many languages across the Balkans and the world 🤯

These melodies unite us 🌎🕊️

I love when the audience sings along. "Dimitroula Mou" is a party song. Dimitroula might seem coy, but she likes to go to town to drink and smash plates. Opa!

LYRICS:
My Dimitra,
I want to get drunk tonight
And with you,
My passionate one, to party
Let’s go to Athena, my plaything
Where there’s fun and retsina, my scandalous one

I’ll bring you a barrel-organ
Have fun, have a ball
Leave your coyness behind
Break things with your calf
And I will pay for
All that you break

"Out of Time, Out of Place" • It's always a pleasure to collaborate with some wonderful people on music we love. Kombos director Ellie Falaris Ganelin talked about this program serving as a bridge between our Hellenic heritage and our lives in the diaspora.

Ohio State scholar of Modern Greek Gregory Jusdanis gave a heartfelt introduction on the universal appeal of C.P. Cavafy, whose poetry is set to music in the song cycle "Another Shore, Another Country," performed by Constantine Novotny and the composer Michael Malis.

A huge thank you to the Greek Olympic Society for sponsoring this event and bringing this resonant music to the Greek community in Columbus, Ohio.

The earliest recordings of Misirlou were done in the Greek urban folk tradition of rembetiko. This song about an Egyptian woman has put listeners in a spell across the Balkans, the Middle East, and the United States. We perform this version in Greek, Bosnian, and — featured in this clip — Armenian.

LYRICS:
"You said you loved me, you declared your love,
Taking my love, you made me cry a lot.
Ah, ah, ah, my sweet love,
I tried to forget but it is impossible,
My love grows, which is unbearable."

Yes! Kombos Collective won a grant from the Elios Foundation to support our latest project, which is to compose a new multilingual song about unity with an accompanying music video.

It's groundbreaking work that captures the essence of what the Bay Area folk community is all about, building peace through music and dance.

Now the ask: the grant covers half the cost, but we need your help to raise the remaining $2,000 by August 22.
