Navigating Challenging IEP Meetings!

🧠 Know your data cold! Confidence comes from being prepared. Review your assessments and anticipate questions.

💬 Lead with empathy meaning Validate concerns from all sides (yes, even when it’s hard 😅). People want to feel heard before they can hear you.

👯‍♀️ Tag-team with your team ! Collaborate with your SLPs, teachers, and case managers beforehand so you’re on the same page 🤝

📝 Stick to the plan by keeping the meeting grounded in the student’s needs and goals. Don’t get pulled into drama or past grievances 🚫🔥

⏸️ Take a pause if needed.. It’s okay to say, “Let’s take a quick moment to regroup. You’re not a robot 🤖💛

🙋‍♀️ Ask clarifying questions!! If a parent or team member gets heated, slow it down with a simple, “Can you help me understand what you’re feeling concerned about?”

🧘 Regulate yourself ! Your calm energy sets the tone. Deep breaths, grounded body language, and steady voice = game changers 😌🧘‍♂️

If you continuously feel overwhelmed in tough IEP meetings.. You’re not alone. Join my mentorship program designed for early career school psychs where you can get support, strategies, and confidence to handle even the most challenging cases

📩 DM me “MENTOR” to learn more 🫶🏻😌

This is how you walk into your next interview feeling clear, confident, and completely prepared!

Let me introduce you to the 5Ps of Powerful Interviews the exact framework I wish every early-career school psych had in their toolkit:

1. Preparation
Go beyond Googling the district. Study their mission, MTSS/RTI practices, SEL initiatives, and what’s important to their community. Prep thoughtful questions and know how your experiences align with their needs.

2. Professionalism
Your energy, communication style, and even how you handle small talk matter. Show up as someone they’d want on their team reliable, emotionally intelligent, and solutions-focused.

3. Presence
Be grounded. Make eye contact. Listen actively. And don’t be afraid to be human warmth and connection often outweigh a “perfect” answer.

4. Purpose
Your “why” is your superpower. Be clear about why you chose school psych, why this role matters to you, and why you’re drawn to this school or district. Purpose creates connection.

5. Positioning
Every answer is a chance to position yourself as a valuable asset. Use examples that show your initiative, impact, and team mindset. Close strong. Let them see the professional you’re becoming.
