Next week, I am running a free visibility challenge called 3 Days to Visible.
April 7-9, 12-1 PST live on Zoom.
It's for women in business who are branding, rebranding, or figuring out their next chapter.
I'm Alpana. Brand strategist, NYT-published photographer, and someone who has spent 20 years helping people figure out how to show up and be seen.
I'll walk you through my ART Framework to help you get clear on your identity, your audience, and how the two come together so your presence actually works for you.
DM me the word Visible for details.
The best images aren't just taken in perfect light.
They're taken by someone who knows how to find it anywhere.

There is no shortage of fancy Diwali photos with people decked up in finery and it is lovely to see.
But last night, I went out with my brother to the local chawl area where Diwali really felt like Diwali.
The homes were lit with matching lanterns and people were actually outside, talking to each other.
In one spot, neighbors were gathering for photos. One woman had already changed into her night clothes. The dressed-up woman next to her laughed and said, โYou changed already? What, you think weโre going to add an AI version of you in the reel?โ
I had to giggle at that.
There was a dad holding his little one as the bhuihcharkra spun around, both of them watching the sparks fly.
Later, we stopped by the chawl (multi-storied buildings with small rooms that open onto a courtyard) where my dad lived till he was 6. Iโd never been there before. Standing there, I tried to picture what life was like โ him and his siblings and parents all in one tiny room.
When I was growing up, our building had a play area. All the flats would light up with the similar colorful lights and lanterns. The kids would come down together, burst firecrackers, laugh till our stomachs hurt. There was connection everywhere.
The new high-rises donโt have that same feeling.
You can barely even tell if anyone has lights up.
After being away from India for so long, I wanted that slice of everyday celebration. The real stuff.
I was there for the photos, obviously.
But then โ it was ridiculously loud and smoky. I lasted for about an hour and had to leave with the overload. Turns out you can take the girl out of America, but you canโt take the โwhere are my noise-canceling headphonesโ out of the girl.

Sometimes the most powerful words come straight from a client.
One of my longtime clients, an attorney, originally booked a session for her daughter. When I suggested she step into the frame too, she did โ and we ended up creating beautiful portraits, including a three-generation portrait with her mom and daughter.
Sheโs hired me multiple times before, and having a repeat client who values art always feels like such an honor.
What strikes me again and again is how many ambitious women hesitate to be photographed. Recently, I spoke with multiple women who admitted to feeling โnot good enough.โ They donโt see themselves as โmodels.
Some even comment that the women in my portfolio look like models โ but most of them are regular people. The magic comes from being willing to step in front of the lens, paired with an artful photographer who helps you step into that role.
Thatโs the gift of photography โ not just capturing how you look, but revealing parts of yourself you didnโt even know were there.

My son, the graduate, is back home from college.
The market has been rough, and heโs been channeling his energy into experimenting besides the job search.
Today he made kimchi rice with leftovers (I donโt eat a lot of rice, but itโs hard to resist when someone else is cooking!).
He has started a new project (besides learning Python).
Sewing.
Heโs hemming a thrifted shirt with a sewing gadget he dug out of my old drawer.
Funny thingโI took a sewing class in high school and hated every minute of it. But hereโs my son, tinkering away, teaching himself skills, trying new things.
In a world where toxic masculinity still runs deep, Iโm proud that heโs the opposite.
And that didnโt happen by accident.
When he was in elementary school, he had chores to do.
By high school, he had to cook once a weekโsomething from scratchโwhile juggling AP classes, sports, and friends.
He didnโt always love it, but it mattered to me to make that shift from patriarchy.
As a society, we can raise boys who cook, sew, experiment, and carry their weight at homeโjust like we can raise girls to lead, build, and own their independence.
Iโm proud to have raised a son who challenges expectations every day.
If we want to see change in the world, we have to raise it at home.

Happy World Photography Day!
Some people lift weights.
I lift cameras, climb on furniture, and make questionable life choices for the perfect shot. But the magic is always worth it.
From bold portraits to behind-the-scenes moments, every image tells a story.โจ
Hereโs to celebrating the courage to show up, the joy of being seen, and the power of capturing the moments that matter most. โจ
