Still inspired from a wonderful week at the National ASTA conference in San Francisco- from watching my own daughter perform with Christian Howes, teaching the Collegiate Violin Master Class, and then watching my student Lilia and Ava soar with Melissa White…it was so wonderful to see everyone and be part of such an inspiring community of performers and educators!

Super excited to present my students at Strathmore Mansion tomorrow with pianist, Cole Anderson for a very special studio recital. So many students have traveled with us this trip to share their music and I am beyond proud of them. This event is free for anyone interested in attending.

I am hosting two workshops with Violin Breakfast this coming month that I hope you will consider attending if you are a student, teacher, or parent! Both the topic of mindset and fostering a healthy practice relationship between parent and child are incredibly important to me. I cant wait to talk about it! These workshops are both held on Zoom and recorded and available as replays.

We finished our Practice Workshop this morning and for the third year in a row we surpassed 100 different ways to practice. This is such a valuable workshop for all of us every summer because it gets us out any practice habits that are weighing us down and opens up dialogue about what practice and preparation can feel like. We also delved into Practice Science and strategy to motivate students to really utilize science based practice methods. The kids are so honest in class and learn they are not alone in how they relate to practice, progress, and the pursuit of beautiful performances.
Im looking to reframe practice as a privilege and a place to find empowerment. I hope we moved closer to it this past month. I want for all students to feel empowered in practice and look forward to their time with their instrument. Honing a healthy relationship with practice takes time and a level of patience and thoughtfulness most preteens and teens don't naturally have so talking it through in a group setting always seems really helpful. There is a stigma around practice that suggests it should be done as a chore or suffering so we all need to work at reframing this for our young artists. This is about wellness and keeping the lines of creativity and imagination open. In the end, that will bring us closer to hearing what they truly feel about their music and I believe they have a uniquely fresh and beautiful perspective.

Our next workshop in Violin Breakfast is entitled PROJECTION.

This workshop will go in depth into all of my exercises that enhance projection of sound, dynamics, and ideas in different size spaces. Being able to project clearly and effectively is crucial to artistic development. This can change the trajectory of a young artist’s path. PROJECTION is an incredibly valuable workshop for students who are regularly performing, competing and auditioning.

What will my violin think tank come up with this year in PRACTICE POWER WORKSHOP for Violin Breakfast? This is our third workshop! We start today and I honestly get excited for this every year. There is just enough time in the summer left to get some new practice inspiration brewing in them before school starts again. Practice isn't a chore. It's a privilege.

Next week we will revisit our most popular workshop again entitled “Practice Power”!

Learn all about how to infuse your practice with the power of science! We will also discuss the many different ways we can infuse our daily work with variety and purpose. Making practice efficient and satisfying is my life’s work and I cant wait to delve back in!
