Boundaries get talked about a lot in wellness spaces.

Know your boundaries. Set your boundaries. Communicate your boundaries.

What doesn’t get talked about as much is what to do when your boundaries aren’t respected. When you’ve said no clearly and it didn’t matter. When the social contract that’s supposed to keep everyone safe turned out not to apply to you.

Pretty Deadly exists in that gap. Not the world as it should be, but the world as it is. We don’t teach women that communication is the solution — we know you’ve already tried that. We teach what comes after, when the situation requires something more than words.

You already know how to ask. We teach you what to do when asking isn’t enough.

“Tap into your rage.”

You’ve probably heard some version of this in a self defense context. The idea that anger is the prerequisite — that you need to access something deep and primal before you can effectively defend yourself.

We disagree. And we’ve disagreed for ten years.

Here’s the thing about female rage: it is real, it is vast, and it has been earned. Which is exactly why telling a woman to produce it on demand at 7pm on a Tuesday after a full day of work, as a condition of learning to protect herself, is not empowering. It’s exhausting. And it misunderstands both the rage and the woman.

You can hit just as hard when you’re laughing. You can execute a technique perfectly when you’re calm, or tired, or distracted, or completely unbothered. Effectiveness doesn’t live in your emotions. It lives in your body, in the mechanics of movement, in knowing what to do and doing it.

The emotions are real. They belong to you. But they are not a requirement for self defense, and any instructor who tells you otherwise doesn’t understand what they’re asking you to carry into the room.

Pretty Deadly focuses on body and technique. Your emotional life is yours to keep.

Most self defense courses will tell you to shout. To make noise. To scream. And if that’s your natural response, use it — it’s a powerful tool. But what if you’re a naturally quiet person? What if the idea of drawing attention makes you incredibly uncomfortable? If screaming is a requirement, how is self defense ever going to work for YOU?

Here’s what we actually teach: if you scream when you are startled or surprised, that’s a reaction — automatic, involuntary. If you get even more quiet when you are startled or surprised, that’s also a reaction.

Both reactions are valid; it’s what comes next that counts - if you punctuate your defenive moves with loud NO’s, that’s ok. If you defend yourself silently, that’s ok too.

The goal is get away, and to get safe. You don’t have to announce it, if that’s not natural to you.

Being told to make noise feels like one more thing you’re doing wrong before you’ve even started. But the truth is: nobody’s keeping score. You can do it loudly, you can do it quietly. Our goal at Pretty Deadly is just to make sure you can do it.

Self defense is taught as a response to worst-case scenarios.

What if someone grabs you from behind. What if someone follows you to your car. What if.

We understand why. But we’ve always thought it was the wrong place to start.

Pretty Deadly starts from the body you already have, in the life you’re already living. Not from imagined catastrophe, but from daily reality — the moments that are uncomfortable but not yet dangerous, the situations that require judgment rather than technique, the encounters where what you need is not a move but a read.

Most of the work of staying safe happens long before anything physical does. We teach that part too.

In martial arts it’s called a kiai. But you already know what it is.

It’s the sound that comes out of you when you stub your toe. When your team scores. When you lift something heavier than you expected. It’s not trained, it’s not performed — it just happens, from somewhere central and automatic in the body.

That sound is a tool.

It can be soft or hard. It can be the quiet authority of mom voice that stops a room, or something that makes a person question their next move entirely. It doesn’t have to be a scream and it doesn’t have to be a word. What matters is that it comes from you, on purpose, when you need it.

Pretty Deadly teaches you to use what you already have. The kiai is just one example of how powerful you already are.

(Yes we know this is not strictly a vocal kiai - we think of it as a fist kiai 😊)

Women spend approximately 50% of our time strategizing how to stay safe.

Which route is safer. Whether to take the call in public or wait. Whether to smile back or look away. Whether to say something or let it go. Whether to stay or leave early. Whether to tell someone where we’re going.

This is not paranoia. This is the cognitive tax that comes with moving through the world in a female body. We pay it so automatically, so constantly, that most of us don’t even notice it anymore.

Imagine what we could do with that time back.

That question is at the heart of everything Pretty Deadly does. Not just teaching women to defend themselves — but returning to them the mental space and physical confidence to stop doing the math quite so constantly. To move through the world a little more freely.

That’s always been the goal.

The self defense industry loves the word “awareness.”

Stay aware of your surroundings. Be aware of who’s behind you. Awareness is your first line of defense.

It’s not wrong. But it puts the entire burden on the woman — as if violence happens because women weren’t paying close enough attention. As if the solution to being grabbed in a parking lot is to have noticed the threat thirty seconds earlier.

Awareness is a tool. It is not a responsibility. You are not at fault for the moments your attention was somewhere else, or for trusting a situation that turned out to be unsafe.

Pretty Deadly teaches awareness as a skill, not a moral obligation. There’s a difference.

WHY “PREDATOR” IS THE WRONG WORD

Somewhere along the way, the language shifted.

Women were being preyed upon — a verb, a thing that was happening, a moment that could be interrupted, escaped, survived. And then the self defense industry decided to call the people doing it “predators.” Which made us, without anyone quite saying it, prey.

Not a verb anymore. A noun. Not something that happened to us. Something we were.

Prey is a deer frozen in headlights. A rabbit trembling in a corner. Something passive, soft, waiting. Never mind that rabbits can break bone with their hind legs, or that deer have stomped coyotes to death. We don’t picture that version. We picture helpless.

We don’t use the word “predator” at Pretty Deadly. Because the moment you accept that framing, you have already given away your deepest power.

You are not prey. You are a woman who is dealing with a threat. Those are very different things.

There is no such thing as a woman who is not a candidate for self defense. Not too old. Not too young. Not too small, too...

There is no such thing as a woman who is not a candidate for self defense.

Not too old. Not too young. Not too small, too unfit, too conflict-averse, too traumatized, too busy, too far gone. We have heard every version of “I’m not the right person for this” and we have never once agreed.

The woman who shakes on her way to the first class and forces herself through the door anyway. The paramedic who needs to protect herself without losing her patient’s trust. The journalist who already trains Muay Thai but wants something built for what women actually face. The data scientist who came for safety and found dance.

All of them. Every single one.
