"Naturally, a bit of the parent-bear rose up in me. These weren’t just characters I had made up for a book. The kids in I Can Be...Me are based on people I know or see in my community. I felt protective. I asked if I could include an illustrator’s note. In it I asked readers to not make assumptions, the kids “are who they are, and they are everything they want to be…The practice is to try to keep your mind and your heart open and see kids as people.”
Needless to say, I learned the lesson perhaps all parents learn. We can support our kids, but we cannot shield our kids, even our literary ones, from the world and its limitations."

We have hesitated to share graphs like the one in our latest newsletter since it highlights that the organized efforts to ban books are in fact working and can destroy 4 years of work in less than a year. Possibly giving fuel to the fire for those spearheading these efforts.
But we also feel it's important to share the reality of bans.
Can you help our small press during these unprecedented book bans? It's the final week for us to reach our funding goal. Support from this campaign has literally been a safety net for our press as we continue to be heavily impacted by targeted book bans and restrictions.

Contrary to conservative assertions, the reality is that body, gender and relationship diversity have been documented across all realms of nature for decades, and in humans for millennia.
The research is piling up and making it abundantly clear that outdated, oppressive politics based on gender stereotypes have no foundation in nature.
Turns out that q***r, trans, and intersex people are perfectly natural and occur at a rate that makes us both necessary and valuable to humanity. Trying to legislate against something documented as natural and necessary will eventually fade in the face of facts. The old, false story of nature being about a boy and a girl will no longer make sense in the same way.
The false binary narrative will be replaced by a larger, holistic perspective of bodies and gender that includes and values everybody.

We, the people, are ready for a new way in the world: a new way of thinking, of relating, of being– rooted in equality, freedom and peace. NOW, more than ever, more and more of us are moving toward this, creating change in our families, our lives and the world.
For us, at Reflection Press, we like change that starts at the bottom and rises! That’s why we begin with our most disenfranchised in society with the belief that real freedom, equality and the possibility of peace rises from there. So we focus a big part of our work on children– children of color, transgender kids, gender diverse & non-binary kids,…..all kids. We produce materials that support a strong sense of individuality along with a community model of real inclusion. Our materials teach social awareness, critical thinking skills, as well as provide much needed reflection and respect.
We envision a world rooted in true freedom, respect, and equality, and motivated by the knowledge that everyone is valuable and everyone has special creative gifts to share.
Freedom Rocks! Let it begin within!
