Long division is one of those topics that trips up almost every kid at some point, and it makes complete sense why.

Unlike addition or multiplication, it isn’t just a single skill. It asks kids to juggle different operations in a specific order, every single time, without losing their place. 🧮

When a child is still building that kind of working memory, one missed step is all it takes for the problem to go off track.

What’s tricky for parents is that the mistakes look different each time, so it’s hard to pin down exactly what’s going wrong.

But it really isn’t about their effort or ability. It’s just about knowing exactly where the breakdown is happening.

Once you can spot it, fixing it is a lot simpler than you’d think. ✅

Sometimes, the praise we think is helping is actually shutting down their learning. According to Carol Dweck’s research, telling a kid they’re “so smart” or a “natural” at math can make them terrified of making a mistake.

To raise a fearless learner, we have to shift how math time feels:

✅ Ditch the “Smart” Label: If they get it fast, praise the persistence, not the speed. It teaches them that math is a muscle, not a gift you’re born with.

✅ Let Them Use Their Hands: Finger counting or drawing isn’t “cheating”; it’s how the brain builds a map of numbers. At SplashLearn, we use visual tools for this exact reason. It makes the abstract feel real.

✅ Stop Solving For Them: It’s hard to watch them struggle, but that struggle is their brain getting stronger. Instead of “Here’s how you do it,” try “Walk me through your thinking.”

The goal isn’t a child who gets it right. It’s a child who keeps trying when they don’t. 💛
