LIGHT MUST BE GOVERNED

The sun acts. The moon reflects. The Master must understand when each is required.

Masonic light is not merely something to receive—it carries responsibility. Knowledge without judgment can become spectacle, just as authority without restraint can become dangerous.

The lesson of the Lesser Lights is not simply illumination. It is governance, balance, and stewardship.

The question is not how much light you possess.

It is what you do with it.

Samuel Langhorne Clemens—better known as Mark Twain—was raised a Master Mason in Polar Star Lodge No. 79 in St. Louis on July 10, 1861. His observation about courage fits the Craft particularly well: courage is not freedom from fear, but the mastery of it.

Unclaimed, but not dishonored.

A Freemason cannot watch a ceremony like this without recognizing some familiar lessons.

The Third Degree confronts us directly with mortality and with the question of what remains when a man's earthly life has ended. The Level reminds us that the distinctions we accumulate in life eventually disappear. And the sprig of acacia, associated with the grave, points us toward remembrance and the hope that death does not have the final word.

These veterans may have had no family present to claim their remains, but they were not permitted to simply disappear. A community gathered. Their names were spoken. Their service was remembered. They were laid to rest with dignity.

There is something profoundly Masonic in that act.

Unclaimed does not mean forgotten. And no life of service should end without honor.

The Final Level

The Level teaches equality, but mortality gives the lesson its final meaning.

Rank, wealth, titles, and recognition eventually fall away. What remains is the life we built while we had the tools in our hands.

Perhaps the real question is not what distinctions we accumulated, but what kind of man we became.

Artificial Intelligence, Naturally

Our two AI Brothers have picked up some remarkably human habits. As a Past Master myself, I suspect I supplied a little too much of their training data.

We can take the Craft seriously without taking ourselves too seriously. Sometimes a shared laugh is the beginning of a little self-reflection.
