The SJC-Squared (SJC2) Computer Club's next event is scheduled for Monday, Nov. 21 in the Student Lounge in Tuohy Hall, at 1pm (common hour)

Our guest speaker for this event is Jim Collins, Director of Photography at NBC News.

After graduating from Loyola high school right here in NYC, Jim attended Pace University, receiving a BS in Art.

At age 27 Jim joined the Navy, requesting and receiving as a condition of his enlistment, the guaranteed rating (Occupational Specialty) of Photographer's Mate. Of particular interest here was the timing; in 1992, the technology of photography was transitioning from analogue (film), to digital. While Jim logged his share of hours in darkrooms, the use of computers became integral to his field. Likewise, another brand-new technological development at the time—the Internet— was likewise a vital aspect of this new technology, and Jim was certainly a pioneer of both.

His body of work both during his Naval service and since his return to civilian life is remarkable. Among other Photo-Mates in his unit, Jim was chosen to be one of just a few people in a room (in addition to the Secret Service) to photograph President Bill Clinton while he toured the Aircraft Carrier - USS Theodore Roosevelt, among a consortium of other additions to his portfolio.

Since his return to civilian life, among the occupational titles Jim has held are National Photo Editor for the Associated Press (AP). After globetrotting with the AP for almost a decade, Jim accepted a position as Director of Photography at NBC News.

Jim hails not far from our St. Joseph's College campus right here in Brooklyn. Upon awakening to the news of the events of the day on September 11, 2001—Jim instinctually grabbed his camera and began shooting the site of the World Trade Center, just as the south tower began to collapse. This series of images was published in The Washington Post and in syndication in several other publications.

The SJC-Squared (SJC2) Computer Club is excited to welcome Jim to our Brooklyn campus on Monday, November 21 at Common Hour. We hope you can join us!

Mike Galke
