Some Gorgeous photos of our recent summer camp at SDSU We Got The Power, a partnership with Roots and Wings Global Arts and Bocón arts. We were fortunate to receive funding to make this camp completely free of cost to kids in San Diego Unified

It’s been a long time since I’ve posted here ! If you know me, you know I absolutely love to throw an enriching and memorable summer Camp. This year is no different and I’m thrilled to be teamed up with San Diego Youth Sessions to place a strong emphasis on Hip Hop and Street Styles and the way they connect to dance forms that came before and after! This is truly going to be something special and transformative for San Diego youth

Excited to dig into this new purchase. It’s almost the time of year where I start sharing Carnaval dances with my students in some of my school residencies. I have such a love for dances of celebration and for seeing cross cultural connections and because of my own experience with Cuban and Venezuelan carnaval dances, this is a natural and fun unit for me. In the past few years, I’ve been wanting to add to this project by deepening my understanding of the Carnaval celebrations in other parts of the world. Including Mardi Gras is a must !! I’ve always longed to visit New Orleans and it strikes me how rich the history is there, yet we don’t know much about it in the rest of the country. I’ve found so many beautiful videos and tons of great music. The culture is beautiful I don’t like teaching anything without having a good understanding of the history and context. So This boom arrived at the perfect time for me to absorb, prep, and dream up how I can share some of this learning with the youth.

I started a new dance residency with three classes of Fifth graders today. I’ve been enjoying starting my residency projects by surveying them on their point of view and knowledge/ experiences with dance. It helps me formulate a vision for how I make the residency as meaningful as possible in the short time I have with them. I was not surprised at all that most of their dance experience comes from tik tok and YouTube, especially since they’ve been growing up in a pandemic. It did surprise me a little that it took some reminders before they realized that dance in their home and at family parties counts as dance that they’ve seen. I had to laugh a little that they thought that most people dance to get “famous and rich” but it makes sense considering the tik tok school of dance they’ve been experiencing. Now it’s time to create a meaningful lesson plan that exposes them to some of the community building, sacred, joyful, expressive, and powerful dance forms from around the world 🌎. What do you think they should learn about why people dance ? Why do you dance ?

Wishing a very happy birthday to one of our summer camp instructors She is an extremely gifted dancer but beyond that she’s a great dance educator. Her genuine energy is contagious and her passion for Hip Hop goes beyond the movement, to the culture and people. It’s truly a gift to have her and to witness her journey. We hope to have her back next summer ! Make sure to check her out and don’t miss the chance to train with her
