There’s something powerful about being the first.
First to take the leap. First to earn the degree. First to show the next generation what’s possible.💜

Meet Dr. Jacob Westerberg — Alliant alumnus, Adjunct Professor in our Industrial-Organizational Psychology program, and now a published author.
“The idea for this book came from a course I took at Alliant called ‘Individual and Executive Assessment.’ It was the first time I learned how assessments could be used to deepen coaching conversations.
After graduation, I began offering assessment services to coaches and organizations. Over time, I noticed the same tension: many coaches had never been formally trained in assessment, while most organizations struggled to sort the growing number of tools for leadership development. I decided to write the resource I had been looking for.”

What happens when you decide to stop letting trauma write your story and pick up the pen yourself?
In this episode of Wellness in Today's World, Dr. Debra Kawahara sits down with author Banning Lyon to discuss his memoir, The Chair and the Valley: A Memoir of Trauma, Healing, and the Outdoors. Banning opens up about his journey through hospitalization, what it felt like to put his most painful experiences into words, and why having agency in therapy was a turning point in his recovery. He also shares something unexpected: how punk rock and time in nature became unlikely anchors in his healing process.
Whether you're navigating your own path through trauma or supporting someone who is, this conversation is a reminder that recovery is ongoing, and that your story is still being written.

Long before prescriptive authority for psychologists became a national conversation, the U.S. Department of Defense quietly launched a program that would change everything.
Just in time for National Military Appreciation Month, this episode of The Continuing Evolution and History of RxP, features host Dr. George Kapalka and two psychologists who were part of that history—Dr. Anita Brown and Dr. John Sexton—to discuss the Department of Defense Psychopharmacology Demonstration Project (PDP). Together, they walk through how the program was developed, what the training process actually looked like, the challenges participants faced, why the program was ultimately dissolved, and the lasting mark it left on the prescriptive psychology movement.
If you work in mental health, care about behavioral health innovation, or are following the ongoing scope-of-practice debate, this conversation is one you won't want to miss.

Please join us in welcoming Alyssa Diaz to the California School of Professional Psychology (CSPP) at Alliant University, Los Angeles! 💜 🧡 Her goal is to earn her Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology, implementing culture-informed care in therapy and working towards the destigmatization of mental health, especially in Asian American communities.
"I had the amazing opportunity to meet with core faculty and socialize with my future peers at their recent Admitted Student Reception 🥂🤝. The whole night was so surreal! I can only remember being a teenager dreaming about becoming a psychologist—now I’ve found myself in a room full of people just like me, who made the big decision to pursue a doctorate in an ever-growing subfield of healthcare.
To my cohort embarking on this journey with me, let’s do this! I can’t wait to grow together, build lifelong friendships, and take this massive step toward becoming licensed psychologists. From dreamers to planners—we have proved ourselves ready for the oncoming challenges and gratifications this field will throw at us. Let’s make the most of it! 🧠💪"
